Anton Coaker: Mainstream media

I’ve found out that I’m being manipulated. See, if you start digging, there seem to be thousands of folk who earnestly believe that the media is being controlled by dark oppressive forces…man. ‘They’ are keeping you in fear, so you go on buying consumer goods, and don’t rise up in revolt. There are supposedly loads of stories which the so called ‘Mainstream media’- or MSM- won’t touch, due to pressure from Rupert Murdoch, David Cameron, The Bush family, and very likely Uncle Tom Cobley and all. It’s a conspiracy to keep us down, comrades.

Now we all know these people have been around for ever, and I’ve always regarded them as rather sorry victims, believing their own b*llsh*t. The difference is that now they’re all in touch with each other on the social media, and can infinitely feed off one another. To prove the Paris terrorist attacks were the covert work of Western governments – and I promise you, there are people convinced this is the case- they pick away at the reported story, sharing links to dodgy made-up websites reinforcing their theory. They can take an ounce of coincidence or ignorant incompetence –such as various acts of Western interference in the Middle East- and turn it into a wholesale mountain of conspiracy to promote bloodshed and misery in the interests of commerce. Hardly any aspect of domestic or international affairs is happening because…well, because stuff happens. It’s ALL a mesh of intrigue and skulduggery.

Donald Trump isn’t rising up the ratings (‘time of writing’ disclaimer applies) because he’s an egotistical bore, playing to the gallery of stupid Americans….. no, he’s secretly chums with Hilary, carefully aiming to scupper Republican chances.

Never once does it seem to occur to them that, in this era of mass communication and surveillance, it would be impossible to keep such things very ‘hush’ for very long, and exposure risks the destruction of political or commercial interests involved. The fact is that the US has recently had its grubby laundry exposed for all to see by 2-3 different hackers/whistle blowers, and is almost certainly going to continue to be exposed thus. Cover ups are difficult, and the more sensitive they are, no doubt the harder they are to contain.

I’ve tried, out of curiosity, to reason with some of these people, but they’re absolutely dead set. And while I’m not under the illusion that my own scribblings are Pulitzer Prize stuff, I begin to wonder when I’m going to feel the cold dead hand of censorship curtailing what I seem to be free to write in any number of publications. I’m hardly known to be shy of saying what I think. For the record, the fullest extent of editorial censorship I generally experience is when I suggest something specifically offensive, insensitive, nonsensical or litigious. No-one tells me what to write. Perhaps The South Dartmoor Ferret Breeders Gazette wouldn’t have a wide enough circulation for it to matter, but I’m curious to know why secret powers haven’t silenced me.

Amongst the overlapping groups are many convinced that vaccinating your kids will make their heads grow green antlers, and further enrich wicked corporate interests. Kids not getting nasty diseases isn’t reason enough for them. Perhaps, instead, they wave magic crystals over their little hessian cribs, chanting some mystic Gaelic verse they heard at a Druid Warlock Fayre. I don’t know.

Their rationale is generally honed with diverse hokum, sourced from shared websites made up by god knows who. Unbelievers are referred to, with a special irony, as ‘the credulous’. And when I follow their tracks along a route I am proficiently versed in, I watch them repeat -nay, cling to- the most absurd nonsense. I’ve presumed it’s reasonable to extrapolate similar conclusions in subjects I’m less well versed in.

Anyway, I only bring this to your attention because some of them seem to be right in the forefront of the badgerist groups, or vice versa. I’ve quietly listened to the backchat, and their understanding of our world –and indeed, the rest of the real world- is completely skewed by their paranoid and delusional grip on reality.

Most of us meanwhile get up in the morning, with every intention of raising crops and livestock, grown out of the dirt, to feed people, thus powering society. There’s no secret hidden agenda. We go out in the rain, and make real things happen to drive real life. We may not be able to unravel the onward mess society gets into, but see pretty clearly what our part in it is. Our understanding and viewpoint invariably starts from that simple premise. Theirs doesn’t, so be calm, explain what you do, and don’t let their nonsense rile you.
