Took the pic today when putting fertiliser on barley.on left side of pic was rape that failed 2 years ago and never got wheat in after that due to wet and soil is thin yellow clay.it was disced periodically to keep weeds down.centre triangle was ploughed intending to drill wheat but too wet so that as also disced to keep it clean and right hand side bit was wheat last year and now barley.look at the colours.bottom bit is nearly as yellow as a norwich city shirt

Lack of soil structure due to missing a years crop roots - we had exactly the same when we took over some land in 93 when the previous farmer had it in bare land fallow. Livery and wet and horrid.

You are probably correct but I have another field also pretty heavy that got fallowed after harvest,due to weather and not intensional.ploughed it last May and drilled rape first couple days in august and it’s the best rape I’ve ever had and looks great.was 2 ft tall before Xmas and just starting to flower.great source of knowledge on here and thanks for all the comments

Just goes to show that the best thing for soil is to actively farm it.

Dad allways said the best thing for a good crop was a good preceding crop, a good root structure helps the soil structure and breaks down releasing nutrients.

Osr does well after fallow/setaside, we always planted it after setaside.

However, if it's left with no growing crop drawing moisture out it is the first to get wet and stay wet when winter hits.

You're seeing wet feet due to the above. IMO.
