Started the field DD, S Beans going in OK, but wasn't comfortable with it, so went back to Patriot,Power harrow then drilled with the Freeflow. Both pictures taken from the same spot in the field, I just spun 180 degrees. Drilled 6th April @ 280kg/ha certified seed

S Barley drilled with the Moore Unidrill 11th April

S Barley drilled 15th April with Weaving GD

Patriot, Power harrow on the 10th April drilled with the Vaddy 13th April.
All 3 drills were set at 185kg/ha and same seed batch.
All 3 S Barley fields are close to each other, following W Wheat and had the same fert and rainfall.

You can't be posting on here that DDing doesn't work sometimes. Go and service the patriot ready for the autumn.

I don't think beans like being DDed on heavy land especially.

It’s not really heavy land, although that is one of my stiffer bits, it’s far from heavy, would grow spuds if I was mad enough ( they are other side of the dyke )

Mineralised N from cultivation boosting the crop? Given the wet conditions at drilling and extreme dry since, I'm surprised that the weaving doesn't look better than the Moore tbh

Is your soil silty sand type that can slump then set like rock? Looks like you are on a flat flood plain? Most seeds like a freshly made bed, nice for the roots to get a start in.

Did the slots open up as the ground dried?
Mine did, so I paddle rolled a week after drilling, good job I did as anywhere that didn't get rolled hasn't really come well at all.
Haven't got any pics, I'll get one next time I'm.there.

GD

in defence of the GD, the Moore probably went in a bit deeper than the Demo on the GD was drilled as I trusted Simon’s judgement.

Don’t think that’s the issue as virtually every seed grew in the S Barley, and the slots also look ok in the beans. It does look like the seed hasn’t chitted in the poorer stands in places. Still covered and have to dig it out to find it ?

Is it just me or is there more trash/dead cover on the surface where the crop's worse? Perhaps if it had been sprayed off over Christmas so the green had broken down more, or wasn't in the process of doing so whilst the seed was germinating?
