I was looking at a field of Firefly a saw a number of ears looking like the attached photo . Not sure what's caused it.

Noticed some ears in some Zyatt looking like that this afternoon. Definitely not terpal here. Had three consecutive light frosts that just managed to freeze windscreens recently as ears emerging.

Frost ? I have barley with ears the same, we had several frosts as the ears were emerging, just what we need this year

I’ve got some droughty patches in some Skyfall that have quite a few ears like that. Those areas were more advanced than the rest of the field and had boots split on the main tiller when we had a frost.

I suspect frost is the most likely explanation, sometimes it is just down to the timing of flowering but also there are some varieties which are more susceptible to blind grain sites from cold conditions. But I didn't recall that Firefly was one of them.

I seem to remember a problem with Halcyon many years ago which had damaged ears due to late frost.
we had a monster frost a month ago which took all the leaves off the ash and young oak.

Quite ironic that a variety called Firefly would have a nice bright coloured end to its ears, actually like a firefly.
They dont glow in the dark do they?
I've got some Firefly in a bit of a frostt pocket, will see what it's like when the ears emerge properly...

Had another look at the Zyatt this morning and quite easy to find damaged ears.

Had a look at Firefly which I have in field alongside and couldn’t find any damaged. Just a question of timing I guess.
