Any Massey Dyna 6 experts have an idea?

A friend of mine @ccp contracting has just drained his dyna 6 transmission and got this bit of metal out of the suction filter. He has no idea what it might be from or whether it’s the start of something serious that’s about to occur. There’s no sign of anything being wrong with the tractor and if he hadn’t changed the oil wouldn’t have known about it. Any ideas?

Best thing he can do is get rid of it, that looks like a part of a gear tooth

I've had a few chunks of metal out of tractor transmissions over the years but, touch wood, none of them resulted in a transmission or hydraulic failure. Probably lucky I suppose. The point being, don't panic and don't fix unless there is clear sign of a breakdown being imminent. Once there is a bad sound or knock or screech, then a timely intervention would be indicated.
Don't let a poorly performing and noisy hydraulic gear pump keep going, ignoring all the warning signs until it seizes, shears its drive shaft resulting in its drive gear falling into other drive gears and thoroughly ruining your cash flow. That kind of thing.

However, remember that repairs are 100% allowable against tax, so while trying to minimise the cost you need not fear a repair unless it is allowed to absolutely grenade but in nine times out of ten you will have an opportunity to stop the tractor before that happens.
That's as long as the driver is sensible of course.

By the size of the bright bit looks like part of the pinion or crown wheel depending on what massey it is you can get a good loom through the oil filler hole. If it's a bigger one be easier to take rear pto housing off

I had a bit that sort of size come out of a 62 series MF it was part of the casting that held the pto shaft in. Shaft used to pop out under certain conditions/load. All sorted now.
