Covid - no hgv tests for a while and DVLA slow in processing applications (I know people sneer but they were forced to work from home and all those systems had to be rearranged to allow for that and the backlog takes a long time to clear)

Mrs Y and I applied for 70+ dl renewal in August and they arrived last week.

Disagree.

There were only just enough before, based on a steady demand and supply profile. There hasn’t been “plenty” of anything useful in this country for a very long time.

The media reported a slight BP(?) shortage, as is their right, and that was the straw that broke the camel.
Blame the petrol companies not the government, huge profits diverted to shareholders as opposed to delivery infrastructure has resulted in no ability to cope with even the slightest of problems. Just in time delivery models have definite issues when problems arise. Any company should be able to cope with an increase in demand but if the money is given to shareholders and not into tankers and staff then it will inevitably end in tears.

Like any crisis its a combination of factors....

Brexit - lots of EU drivers left

Covid - no hgv tests for a while and DVLA slow in processing applications (I know people sneer but they were forced to work from home and all those systems had to be rearranged to allow for that and the backlog takes a long time to clear)

Pay & conditions - drivers continued to leave and be pulled to the better conditions of Amazon et al

Only one or two of the three factors may have just made things harder to manage. All three has caused a proper squeeze.
so why is the eu short of drivers ?

They have a shortage of drivers but not shortages in the pumps/shops.

A shortage of drivers can be managed with overtime, prioritisation and price rises. As I said, there are 3 factors - we're affected by all three, whereas Europe/America are affected by two.
