Any one in the hydraulic hose business?

Having the ability to do your own hydraulic pipes can be cost effective and very handy , and can be done on a tight budjet! An old Gates type hand press can do up to 1" hoses, but I havent bothered yet with that size. For example 3/8" size hose and bsp fittings , very common on farm machinery, trailers etc. Twin wire quality hose can be bought for £2.20 / meter, ferrules 35 pence , and 3/8 fittings inserts in bsp from 45 pence to £1.50 . Yes its too expensive to stock evrything, but on a quiet wet afternoon, go around your machinery with a hydraulics catalogue, and measure up what you might need. But unless you have the ability to find and understand all the different types of fittings and hoses available........leave it to someone else.

That's very interesting, I thought it would be an important part of your business, that would be used regularly.

It gets used from time to time but not regular sometimes months pass and it does nothing!
Plus some hoses are just best bought genuine cause they are better or specials or sometimes they are cheap enough not to warrant the parts and labour to make it. Or just because I don't want to go to site take the hose off, come back make it then go back to fit, if time allows and genuine hose isn't excessive its cheaper to buy it in and do the job in one hit.

I have a swager that is in a 6’ square shipping container that has burning gear, generator, welder and a whole host of tools that I take out to site if working away form home then we’re self sufficient on demo jobs, nothing worse than to blow a hose and not have a clue where to get it repaired especially on a weekend

My intention is not to have it for self repair but to run it as a business. I think I may have been misunderstood in my posts. Although I do agree there is the chance I'll end up with a random assortment of fittings that I will never use.

Have you (or your accountant) been through the books of said business?

The trouble is, there is no one “right” answer with this it all depends on location, customer base, competition etc etc. Then what you want from it and how hungry you are to chase down work etc.

All will be vastly different depending on all the above.

The fact that most people are saying they would just run to the local hose supplier would indicate to me that there is definitely potential.

Depends....

How desperate is said customer to pay (presumably) a premium for on site service. I've never found one yet to be anywhere near as competitive as my local who'll make it up while I wait at the trade counter.

Now if I'm truly desperate / can't fix/repair in situ thats a different ball game.

I suppose it depends on the captive customer base, up here there are a lot of harvesters, forwarders, chippers and diggers serving crushers, all which lose considerable money during downtime so are willing to pay the premium to get back up and running.

If he meets at there yard then obviously considerably less.
Have to be a horrible hose for him to call them out .
They make up hose in the van .
They carry a obseen amount of stuff in those vans
