while on the topic of soft fruit, a few of our blackcurrant bushes just didn't grow this year, no leaves nothing,
anyone any ideas on that one, just like someone turned off the electricity to a light bulb

Root rot, dead arm or check for hollow stems caused by clearwing moth. Sometimes they just die.

3 died all in the same corner, they were growing fine last year and i gave them a thinning start of Feb, weather conditions were suitable, ill get a photo tomorrow.

Just worried there is a disease about and it will spread to the rest...........

back on topic was doing a bit of work in the garden this evening and noticed this on one or our blackcurrant bushes which has gotten worse over the last few weeks, i think it seems to be dying

any ideas

I dont think its wind damage as that bush is east facing, its not weed killer damage either

sprayed some bluestone on apple trees a
Might be aphids but to me looks like it has had a whiff of weedkiller.
sprayed some bluestone a month ago on neighbouring apple trees, no scab evident on apple trees this year.

strange that the bluestone could only effect one bush though, as the 6-7 other bushes would also have got bluestone

other than the bluestone can guarantee no weed killer nearby

Root rot: the whole plant will pull out of the ground.
Dead arm: A branch dies off.
But I’d snip through one of the affected branches, if it’s hollow the issue is probably clearwing moth and it’s too late. Feed, water and pray.

I must do a test for root rot

what could cause Root rot

its not lack of moisture everything else is thriving, Its not poor drainage after 40years im pretty sure drainage is ok, there is a deep ditch 10ft away

Phytophthora. Like most fruit, they hate wet feet, sitting in cold, wet, compacted soil over winter does them no favours. Phytophthora is a soil water pathogen, so increase drainage. I used to subsoil right next to the crown every couple of years, switching sides. It looked brutal but kept them going. Black currants are relatively hungry, and you want good strong shoot growth from the roots, so there’s no harm in giving them a good shovel of compost, or if you can afford it, some N.

We gave them circa 10cwt/acre of 20:10:10, anything less wasn't enough.
Imagine throwing £500/acre of fertiliser at blackcurrants :O

thats quite a dose of fert, how do you keep down the grass from the trees after that much fertilizer, you can get in around your trees with a verge mower I guess

This is what the dead branches I cut away look like
The black dot in the centre is a sign of old age I guess, 45 years old or thereabouts

is it a sign of any particular disease
