Anyone Can Pullstart Engines

That device wants to be made out of some pressed/formed and bolted aluminium or even timber, not machined. Machining is a hugely expensive way of making something but understandable you used it for a prototype.

That makes sense. Lots of different profiles of extruded aluminium out there and modern plastics are very tough and can be moulded into any shape.

So after some surgery prevented me from starting my engines for a while, I build the drill powered pullstarter
See it in action at

or visit my web site at https://www.pullstarters.com

Sorry if this seem like a small advert - I'm a start-up with zero marketing budget and even if you don't want one , I would appreciate feedback on the tool.

Do you reckon you could make it more compact in series manufacture? Perhaps also moulded from high strength ABS or something similar could bring the cost down and make it more user friendly.

Liked the idea, and thought it might suit Mrs HM for starting the lawnmower, especially at the start of the season. Could see it being of use for my suitcase generator too - it's only ever called into service rarely and always has stale petrol.

Didn't like the price - neither the website being in dollars, nor the actual number which is about 4x what I expected. Had to search around to get where you were based.

Get the manufacturing costs down to an affordable level and then stick it onto something like Ebay UK or Amazon marketplace.

Or even www.marketplace.farm

if your going to advertise for free on TFF it would be kind of nice / good manners to sell via it really and put a little back !

IMO, if your not in a fit state to start the engine by pulling a cord, your not in a fit state to use it.
Quite a lot of people would have the opinion that if you cant start, the you shouldn't use. . After my surgery however, I wasn't sure I would ever have the ability to start these old engines that like me were Ok when they got going. At the time I thought I was in a fit start to use them without being a danger to myself or others. This tool is probably not for everyone, but it gives an option for those who want to do what they've always done for a while longer. One trialist said it also gave him the excuse to treat himself to a decent drill - so that may be another possible upside !!. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Understood, but it will be the downfall of you. Can you get a mechanical designer to take the idea and develop it into one that's assembled from mass available profiles etc? You need to get the price down, I'm afraid, and also get the design protected / patented from someone else copying it. If not someone else will do the investment part with a mass manufacturer and you'll be stuffed.
Unless the OP has already a patent application in place, by showing the idea on here he has made it public knowledge so not patentable anymore.

This was taken out of context, i was however revering to hand held appliances like chain saws, strimmers, leave blowers etc, some on here have quoted that they could be used on generators, water pumps etc which they could, but electric start would be my option, my father could,t start the quad with the pull cord but he managed the push button ok.
