If it rains like forecast pre ems will work well. Our best blackgrass control last year was on the earliest drilled crops. Weird.

i have given up believing forcasts, we have had two yellow weather warnings this month and have had 6mm total in sept......

Sept, has been warmer and drier than, May,June,July and August so far
We had 2-3 inches of rain last Sunday in this area. Forecast 3mm!

I was told to farm by the conditions not the calendar. Saying that I did drill 40 acres of wheat on Thursday and will be back on tomorrow as the Forcast looks more unsettled next week for us

The Beeb monthly outlook..

Saturday 25 September – Sunday 3 October

Turning decidedly more autumn next week.

Monday 4 October – Sunday 10 October

Nearby low pressure keeping things changeable.

Monday 11 October – Sunday 24 October

Staying unsettled with changeable temperatures.

Well if this turns out to be half accurate I might be kicking myself in a few weeks, maybe I should plough through the night and try get some second wheat in tomorrow... :nailbiting:

Even "sunshine and showers" would be more informative than that lot!

Only planted 26 hectares of winter barley in the autumn last year. 190 hectares went into spring barley. 44 winter beans drilled in March. 3 hectares of spring wheat. Spring barley averaged 2.8t/a. Beans 1.4t/a. Selling barley now for £170 per tonne. Not selling for malt they can’t be trusted. Been there done that. There is life after wheat. Because I went done the spring crop route last year I’ve got a large chunk of urea left over. So if I do the same as last year. Only need two load of 26n 37so3. If I can’t get in more beans or fallow. Just me and my brother on the farm. Last piece of Machery will be payed of this January. Had enough of this high input high output game. Life’s to short to be lining other companies pockets.

For those with very long memories:
In 1969 we'd finished drilling by the end of September just as I set off for my first year at Shutts.
The following year, 1970, was notorious for septoria when a lot of new varieties with potential broke down [Maris Nimrod I seem to remember] and the farm manager said, "We are never again going to drill wheat before the end of September."
Rather similar to the Extase problems this year ?
Do you went to Shutts aged 11 ?

Well we have just finished combining the last of the spring barley today
well start drilling tommorrow
Be nice to get some drilled in September for a change
Lol
( were always last around here)

I've 21 acre to little bale & try to stack tomorrow, going to be a long day hope the forecast for tomorrow is right & Monday wrong. Need rain on Tuesday its too dry.
