Anyone else not started drilling yet?

seems everyone making clouds of dust.
had less than 10mm since mid July, hardly a vounteer has chitted, grass burnt to a crisp.
after bad blackgrass last year, plenty of seed return. am i the only one stalling?

Seed being dressed a week on Monday. As above with rain. Not big areas to go, and everything worked, harrowed and rolled ready.

Wheat ground still covered in maize and beans.
Barley ground to be limed and mucked this week. Though I got impatient and sprayed off last week.

For those with very long memories:
In 1969 we'd finished drilling by the end of September just as I set off for my first year at Shutts.
The following year, 1970, was notorious for septoria when a lot of new varieties with potential broke down [Maris Nimrod I seem to remember] and the farm manager said, "We are never again going to drill wheat before the end of September."
Rather similar to the Extase problems this year ?

We are going to start in about half an hour. but only got probably 20% of the seed I need. If we can get 1st Wheat and barley n this week then I will be happy.

Walked a lot of ground this morning. BG at single leaf on ground cultivated a month. Nothing going in here for 2 weeks. If the weather turns so be it, I am not compromising BG control. It is very dry so will take some amount of rain.

Well if this turns out to be half accurate I might be kicking myself in a few weeks, maybe I should plough through the night and try get some second wheat in tomorrow...

Last two years it was dry here till first wk oct then rained all winter, if bg swamps the crops then will spray it off in spring,better than looking at bare patches under water.
The BBC long range forecast for Sept was rain most days so woulsnt take any notice of what they say

The same Beeb that promised us up to 50mm 3 weekends ago, we got 5mm? Then the same a fortnight ago, promised showers with thunderstorms, got 1mm...

Ground is like a desert, PP has stopped growing 2 weeks ago and the stale seedbeds are a complete non-starter. Did have some early autumn sown Bumblebird type mix get going on a stubble, but looking like it'll want redrilling come Spring.

The Heavy clay that was due Bumblebird mix has been worked up, and broadcast fodder rape to get a green cover, and try in the Spring.

For the least lost anything not showing a viable crop on this land by mid November should have the gates welded shut until the following Autumn...

2 yrs ago nothing would have survived if it had been drilled before the 23rd sept so it will go in when planned or it won;t go in at all

I'm less bothered about the date. More conditions. Early december fine if the soil allows me.
