That'll be one of these then?

Basically, positive from the battery goes to one heavy terminal on the starter and negative to the other and the small terminal receives a live feed from a switch/button to activate. Not sure how critical it is as to which of the large terminals are positive or negative but it may depend on whether your system is using positive or negative earth. If you are using an alternator for charging,it has to be negative earth but if a dynamo,it can be either.

Many thanks Agrimax. We're on it today. Similar to my father's 'measure twice cut once ' I'll 'think twice connect once'!

Terminal polarity will not control direction as the motor has field magnet windings, but will affect the solenoid control.
The solenoid will be earthed through one of the larger terminal, it will need to go to the chassis (whether negative or positive) so that the pull in and hold in coils in the solenoid work correctly.
If wired the wrong way, you will have little or no power in the solenoid to engage the teeth/make good contact inside.
Hope this helps ..............

That's interesting stuff Mursal. I've a Ford 2N with a Perkins P3 and that CAV starter.Usually a lot of grinding when the button is depressed but it engages eventually.Always assumed the starter needed overhauled but am now wondering if the cables just need swapping over.Must try it and see.............
