Anyone have a straw bale burner heating system / electric producing thing?

Run a basic straw burner here - put anything (wood/straw) on it, plumbed into the domestic central heating. We retained the oil boiler for autumn and spring when you only need the odd hour.
You can run more than one house if they are close enough- the insulated pipe is expensive. Just spec the boiler appropriately

How much if you don’t mind me asking did a system like this cost? All I can find have been for huge commercial type systems with prices to match.

I bought a secondhand boiler and did most of the installation myself, so quite reasonable.
I looked at the rhi schemes - hugely inflated prices and the prospect of dealing with government departments put me off. Also, had to use new equipment, approved installers and (I think) remove existing oil boilers.

It depends on scale I would say.

Running two here at separate locations, one heats a village, the other a farm with a lot of buildings.

Straw is not without its headaches.

If you just want to heat a house there is a fair amount of work involved each day
How long are these prices going to be around for though...

Presently costing us £40/week in straw to heat a farmhouse. On kero it would be £260/week. Fag packet maths.

I’ve not done the maths but it would make me smile if I did.

I’m still charging tenants 5p / kWh for all their heating.

One boiler is costing us about 2p/kWh in fuel at the moment which I am quite happy with.

Thanks. I’d have to get someone to install it all as tbh I wouldn’t have a clue what I’m at. But thanks anyhow.

What sort of boiler did you put in and would it run on straw ?

Be no good me having that farm boiler thing, I'd ruin it by seeing what I could get it to combust. Bricks and mortar, cat litter, domestic waste in an effort to make space in the black bin etc.

Looking ahead electricity prices and demand for grain not so much the straw or dried grass, not necessarily the palatable stuff anyone have a system of burning material for energy. ? Don’t shoot me down just asking

Have far more kit than just the steam engines. Dont mind anyone knowing about the steam engines both Bellis & Morcom each having peak power output of 375kw.
