Anyone heard about Newark Livestock Market!

This doesn’t sound good. The one I know about in a similar situation was basically pulled by the bank. All shares were extinguished and a new company was set up by an individual who had a huge amount of money previously invested who had to invest a further huge amount to prevent loosing the initial amount. This sounds like the only possible saviour if it applies.

Let’s not talk the market down just yet, I for one would be very sad to see it go and think we should be doing our best to support it and all livestock markets, without them we are at the mercy of the processors.
As farmers we are sometimes our own worst enemy, we should all sell through markets and force the processors to bid for our stock and do away with slaughter only markets to allow us to bring animals home if they don’t make a reasonable price.

Spotted you over the other side of the packed ring ;)

Don't think so - Ted Ogden was there to talk about Farmer run Co-operative Markets (eg Skipton)
My take on the main points (other interpretations, I'm sure, will be available)
  • Newark has a charter (like Louth) that says, if there is demand for a livestock market, it must have one. Judging by the attendance (cattle ring overflowing with farmers, dealers and buyers) there is a demand.
  • The Gascoine family would like to cease to be involved, although are willing to remain until something else can be put in place.
  • The site is council owned and it is thought they would be willing to transfer the lease.
  • The object of the meeting was mainly to judge if there was enough interest in a co-op to warrant doing a business plan.
  • IMHO, the general feeling was that nobody was keen to commit to anything until more details were available.
A detailed plan will now be put together and be brought to another meeting.
There's a long way to go.
Meanwhile, the market will carry on as normal. Mrs G assured us that funds will be available to ensure sellers get their money.
Best of luck to all involved, I for one want a green market in striking distance from here.
Do you think being a red market has been Newark's downfall?

It doesn’t seem to have hurt Worcester in any way. It can work to increase throughput, as dealers will buy from smaller ‘green’ markets locally on Tuesday and drop them straight into Worcester. Plenty of cull ewes bought cheaply in Cirencester & Stratford would appear in Worcester the next day (often making £20 more) when I used to sell there.

It never bothered me going to a red market, as I wouldn’t dare risk taking all manner of disease home by buying stock in. If the auctioneer consistently didn’t get a good price, I’d sell elsewhere.

I don't think so - here's yesterday's AHDB figures for Newark and Selby (also a red market)..........

I 'get' that as you're a high health status pedigree breeder.
However for some of us 'mere mortals' the safety net of a green market (especially when trade is dropping) can save us getting shafted. With the current sheep trade red markets are no problem.

Pedigree side makes no difference to that decision really. I have no wish to bring back scab, lice, Mv or OPA (amongst others), and would accept a financial hit to avoid that risk. However, I take the view that the healthy commission I pay the auctioneer means that I am employing him to work on my behalf. If I felt he wasn’t doing a decent job of that, I’d pay that commission to an auctioneer elsewhere, rather than buy in risks in order to get him out of a hole.

Small markets that rely on two dealer buyers are always going to be more prone to sellers getting shafted of course, but I’d avoid those anyway.

Worcester may have got low on finished cattle nos. and needs to pull the job back ; but it's a cracking market to sell sheep in ..... and the 'green' job can only benefit it a lot ongoing .
