When you read the Bentham mart fat report, there are almost more ex Newark vendors than Bentham locals get a mention :D
True, when Newark started going wobbly I rocked up at Bentham with a load and there was 8 rows of belting, clean, perfectly finished hoggs in. I asked where they had come from (as everyone else's were showing dirty with the weather!) and that was the start of the Newark boys arriving! Bloody good sheep, put us too shame really! Then again I can't afford to feed Hoggs over 48kg... ??

There are many markets and many miles between Newark and Bentham including Bakewell and Skipton to name two and markets such as Melton and Rugby just down the road so what is the attraction of Bentham ????

Quite a few did end up in Skipton, one of my mates on the east side reckoned a ruck turned up in Melton. When your market closes people tend too spread about rather than all descend on one market (which would probably wreck the trade at that market for a while)

I think Greg from Bentham went down there selling once or twice after James left? Remember it being mentioned at the time. Bentham do sell at 3% so I suppose that is an incentive?

Must be 120 to 140 miles travelling and not the best of roads, that’s some major time and expense on top of usual market expenses

The week before last the truck that pulled on the dock next to me at Thirsk was another former Newark vendor. I knew they were a 'stone's throw' from Melton so I asked, "What are you doing here?"

"Better off driving 120 miles here than selling there," was the reply.

IMHO, the AHDB figures tell the same story.

The proximity of Thirsk and Darlo to the A1 make the trip there much easier than winding your way to Bakewell or Skipton. Can't comment on Bentham as I've never been there, but they do seem to have a good trade for smart lambs.
