Anyone known of an issues with JR Firby?

If customer not happy ask them to take it back and find something else.

Dealer has the chance to sell it again if they say it was what it was and was worth what it was
I’ll bear that in mind. Not something I’ve thought of. I’m hoping they’d just sort it for the money I’ve paid for it and the trouble it would be getting the paperwork changed back over.

Hi all,

Has anyone known of any issues with sales from JR Firby at Slingsby?
Bought a David Brown from him which when i tried it, seemed to be in good working order with everything working and he told me that everything worked as it should even the PTO (which i specifically asked about). Got it home and put it to work and can't engage the PTO (the clutch plate seems stuck) and the selectomatic lever has come off in my hands. I've never seen a leaver just come off either so it must have been going for some time.

He was reluctant to reply to my phone calls for some time and when he did, he didn't seem interested in sorting it until i reminded him that he told me that everything worked as it should, and that given the price I've paid for it, it is now parked up and of no use.

He's supposed to be calling round to look at it at some point, so hopefully he'll follow through on that.
I would, with the engine off, connect the pto up to a machine with a high load like a rotavator or power Harrow.
Start the tractor with the pto in gear with clutch down and raised off the ground.
Then with clutch still down drop it into work. If it's just a plate stuck from lack of use it will soon pop off

Or rip the middle out of the clutch plate if it's really well stuck, ask me how I know that one.

Its been appalling customer service and I’ve had horrendous verbal abuse over the phone. It seems like it’s been a very expensive mistake buying from Firby.
probably because they have seen this thread. in fairness you probably shouldnt have named them without giving a chance to sort the issue

have you tried what dave W suggested?

I’m not joking here now but years ago I witnessed two local legends unseize an 880 pto clutch by connecting a shaft between the 880 and a 990 I think. Start the 880 in gear to spin the shaft and then engage pto on the other one to brake against it. It actually flipping worked but I dread to think of all the things that could have gone west 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

I would think they would want to sort it knowing it has been put up on here, maybe a tad pist off about it though, we all have to remember as somebody has already said 50 yr old so owt can happen,

I can understand you being annoyed if he didn`t seem interested BUT maybe you should have given him a bit of a chance before airing it on here - a few days rather than minutes! You might just have been annoyed if you were bad-mouthed before you`d been given a chance to put something right.
I think he had 2 old DBs and I think they`d come from another dealer (I only THINK, not sure) so he may not know a real lot about them. I DID think they were strong money!! (These dealers do seem to swap the odd tractor or two about among themselves - I`m amazed how much of it seems to go on - and the "mark-ups" too!!)
Hope you`ve not burnt your boats as far as getting it sorted by Firby is concerned - was it abuse because you`d come on here?

Sorry I can`t get your point.
The point is the DB is very cheap, some problems should have been expected, I’m sure the dealer would have done something the OP should have approached the dealer BEFORE posting a thread on here, the dealer is held in high regard by the vast majority of people.

The point is this DB was not very cheap - it was STRONG money and it was sold as being right! (STILL CAN`T UNDERSTAND YOUR POINT - maybe I`m just thick!)

I don’t know how much he paid, a DB shouldn’t break the bank, I’ve got four, you can have the lot for under £10k! Maybe the tractor wasn’t working properly, but the OP shouldn’t have posted here without going to the dealer first.
Maybe I’m the one that’s thick, for thinking this!
