My winter barley was looking sick a few weeks ago, I put 3lha of mn and mg on (data from two years of sap testing) and it looks much better now.

The bulk of anything I ever looked at was on high magnesium soils. I bet mag deficiency happens more than we think.
Mg uptake in cereals is predominantly by massflow. It there is insufficient moisture in the soil, plant mg uptake will be restricted. Mg also affects carbohydrate movement within the plant leaving accumulations in the leaves which can affect the growth of heavy carbohydrate sinks such as root development. Reduced root growth further risks other nutritional deficiency's and environmental stresses such as ....drought.

Mg is also very susceptible to leaching, so this winter may have had an affect on Mg levels in the topsoil...

Chlorosis is a late visible response to deficiency. Yield will have been compromised by the time symptoms appear.

Some will get damaged, especially the ones pinched between the rings. Perhaps a hot sunny windy day might be a bit much for a temporarily weakened plant. @Clive is rarely bothered by the few badly damaged plants.

The forecast looks much wetter for next week now so maybe they will recover quicker

Won’t harm the plants with the hot weather and strong winds?
I'm rolling triticale at the moment and theres a fair bit of leaf on the rolls and you can find loss leaves and shoots in places laying on the ground that have been sheared off by the ribs but I'm not worried I feel like I'm doing good.

Oddly I never worry about damage from rolling and always feel like it's doing good but I panic like hell about chemical damage which is probably far less severe.

I think that's because rolling damages part of the plant, but it's often strong enough to recover and repair the bits that are damaged.

Chemical stunts the whole plant from the inside.

Rolling a few slightly cloddier fields of a barley this afternoon that are about the 3-4 leaf stage. Doing a decent job crushing up any clods. Rain forecast for the next 3 days so rolling plus rain should get any remaining weeds germinated to spray in 10 days or so. Few leaves coming off but not to worried about that. Bit more concerned about causing ungerminated seeds to grow and being behind the main bulk of the crop but what will be will be, I'm calling it learning
