Anyone thinking of installing heat exchange pump for central heating...think again

It is clear that HVO is only a solution provided you have a green feedstock. After that, you're back to making fuel from scratch using carbon from the air and hydrogen from some kind of serious process heat.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil can only be made from a green feedstock, but it cannot be classed as an advanced renewable when virgin oil is used, furthermore oil seed crops tend to be relatively inefficient from a land perspective, the option might be algae, but the process of harvesting the oil is pretty energy intensive. From an engine performance-to-cost basis it's pretty difficult to beat.

Its relatively straight-forward to create a synthetic "crude" from municipal waste, that can be used as a low carbon feedstock at a refinery.

The synthetic process from captured CO2 and hydrogen from electrolysis are gaining pace now, the first plant in Chile (Haru Oni) is due to start producing gasoline next year.
