App for scanning rows of books?

Slightly odd request- our Archaeological Society has a huge collection of several thousand books which filled the small house where our librarian lived. He had his own method of finding the right one, but when he died, we simply had to load them all up and ferry them back to the farm in the Ifor. We have made them a home in a suitable area of our rental units, but are faced with the daunting task of cataloguing the collection so we know what we have.
At our meeting tonight, a member said he thought he had seen an app that allowed you to scan along the rows and read off the titles to memory, but he couldn't remember any details. If anyone has come across such a thing, it would greatly simplify our task. :)

My other half has an app on her phone that allows her to scan the ISBN barcode on a book which then stores the title & allows her to keep track of what she has. She likes (loves) books, so between her & our two young children there’s quite a few books in our house! Seems a quick & simple system.

Hi, thanks for the comments. We were hoping there might be a way of scanning along the titles as they stand on the shelves to save typing every one into a database. I'll have a look at the suggestions, thanks again ! :)
