if it's just a basic computer for surfing/emails I'd stick with Windows. Maybe look at one of the Toughbooks should you need to take it out the office.

Wonder if Microsoft is making life difficult for older operating systems, my desktop got to the point of being almost unusable as a mainline system running vista.
Anyway dipped a toe in the apple Waters by buying a s/h all in one iMac as a look see what all the fuss was about.
Great machine so far completely stable and a beautiful screen to look at, installed w7 on half the disk space so you've got a choice of either software to use.
The price of a new one is a bit ott. though.

The problem is, in the world of IT everything that is new now will be superseded in 6 months and obsolete in 3 years.

We try to keep the farm's main laptop up to date to keep it reliable and trouble free then hand them down to wives/children as they get out of date. Until a few months ago I was using a 12 year old Acer at home for messing about on the web and it was barely usable.

You have to consider the cost of keeping up to date with hardware and software progress when choosing the tech and operating system you use. A £400 windows laptop will keep farm records and browse the internet just as well as a £3000 Airbook but will hurt less when replaced after a couple of years.

If you work in publishing or an animation studio then the Apple would be a wise choice, but I don't think many of us on here are moonlighting for Pixar.

Basically it all depends on budgets

Apple is better but price reflects that

That said if you spend apple money on a pc it will be just as good but most buy cheaper PC’s and as a result they a much lower performance than the average Mac

I use both Mac and windows 10 daily - not a lot to chose between them

Either is a massive improvement over XP or vista however which really was very poor !

I have a high spec MacBook Pro bought in 2012 that is every bit as good as the day I bought it a spec still compares well to new machines - was expensive at the time but has been exceptionally good value

Apple replaced the Retina display last year FOC as the coating was coming off it - well out of warranty. Their customer service is exceptional

I love Apple and have used them for years. I am now using a Mac book pro that is ten years old. Still better than most windows laptops. When it needs replacing it will depend on how flush I am. If the Scottish government pull their finger out and pay up all the subs they owe, I may be able to afford a new Apple-Mac, otherwise i may have to downgrade to windows.

I wouldn’t get an all in one again. They are just a group of components stuffed together in a small a box as possible and when one fails neither you or anyone else will be able to repair it. My first one the hard drive died and the second one the touchscreen went mental which is fine as you can’t run the driver off with a fiddle but every update turns it back on again :banghead:

thanks for replys
there are a pros and cons
a big ipad might work but find reading a bit hard on smaller screans
bit of a messy eater so lap tops may get food in keyboard and kill a lap top
kinda think smart phone can follow me around if need be so desk top may be best suited for home
maybe apple as can talk between phone and computer

I would get a very well specced windows PC. The only way apple is better is that it's marketed better! I work with apple and windows based products daily and will take microsfot over apple any day of the bloody week.

Just remember alot of agriculture software is written for Microsoft systems only and do not support apple (its costs companies a whole lot more money to support an additional OS in time, money and employees!).

Should you have an issue a PC proficient engineer will charge you £15-25 an hour to fix, an apple engineer will want £90.

A PC can also be upgraded in far more ways than a limited imac.
