Applying for a Firearms Licence.

This is the oddest thing I’ve heard of in a while. A misdiagnosis? Of schizophrenia?

I had a relative who was schizophrenic, 99% of the time he was A-ok, 1% of the time you wouldn’t have trusted him with his own shoelaces. The police are absolutely correct in not issuing a license.

If there has been a genuine mistake, which I find almost unbelievable, you need to take it up with the NHS, farmers aren’t experts in mental health and laws surrounding them.

I’m now renewing my firearms and shotgun license, took the form to my doctors for them to fill in
All I did was put down my doctors surgery address and phone number. Why did you take the form in??
Because that’s what they ask you to do now .
I've been in the 'process' of renewing mine for some time now. (Same procedure here as @michael N123 .)

Humberside Police are that far behind with their paperwork that they sent me an extension letter to say I'm still entitled to hold a firearm even though my certificate has expired.

Last week I received another extension to my extension letter - jeez, how far behind can they be :scratchhead:

OP is the one in denial.

While he seems to accept that he was, at one point, under the care of the Mental Health Team- which would only happen if he had a mental health condition- he does not accept their diagnosis.

He also claims to be a clinician but refers to schizophrenia as a disease. It's not a disease, you can't "catch" schizophrenia like the flu, it's a mental illness. Any clinician would know the difference.
Not sure he said he saw the Mental Health team, just that there were no letters regarding the diagnosis. A mistake could be made to enter the diagnosis in the wrong record but it is certainly the responsibility of the GP to ensure it is correct. If not it would be removed.
I cannot understand why he would pay a private psychiatrist for an assessment unless there was some substance to the history of schizophrenia which in itself would definitely be a barrier to ever owning a firearm.

Actually you're wrong.
It is a right under British law to own a gun, you just have to demonstrate that you are safe to own one and would not represent a danger to others if you do.
Not sure you are correct there. The situation for a shotgun certificate and Firearm Licence is very different.
For a FAC you have to demonstrate a good reason.

Not getting into the argument of whether the OP should have a gun , but I find it surprising the amount of trust put into a public body (NHS). Of course they can make mistakes

The OP said that he had not been diagnosed. Surely a record of a diagnosis would state who was the psychiatrist was who carried it out and when. If there isn't, then it's an incomplete entry and the surgery must investigate it.

Not one response from OP ?
Publicly viewable… could well be a troll I would seriously consider the information posted by some for editing the OP has lit the touch paper and retired……

do not feed trolls…… I would ask admin to check the registration details and hide this thread from public view until confirmed it is a legitimate post…

Antis and SABS have been known troll shooting forums intentionally …..

There are a few things you need to have in place before getting a gun.
Shooting permission, if you don't have your own land.

Most GP surgeries ask you to confirm your address.
That's how I found out about the other person, they read out his address to me. And then went very quiet as they realised that they had given me the wrong information. Implying that it was actually my fault.

I kept getting appointment reminders for someone who lived halfway across the country. Different name, different addresses, very different date of birth.

gun.... shotgun certificate - easy enough to obtain, I got mine at 12.

an FAC is a very different animal, don’t confuse them!

a shotgun is dangerous but a high powered rifle / multi shotgun is another level!

Hello,

I'm new to the forum. I am an avid airgunner and full member of my local rifle club since December 2019. The problem arose when I requested my medical records and saw a diagnosis of schizophrenia recorded, but never been diagnosed. So the GP records state, says diagnosis of schizophrenia though I cannot find any letters from the mental health team, to find when this was. I myself am a Clinician and know full well I don't have this disease which makes the situation doubly perplexing and confusing to all. I spent 1000 pounds to get a full Psychiatric assessment and of course it have me the all clear i.e no symptoms and no diagnosis.
But the diagnosis stays on my records, due to foul play and you cannot amend. When it comes to applying for my FAC the Police reject such applications but in my case it's only someone's lying word, which is what I knew all along.
As for me I'm perfectly healthy and fine and have a full time job, and it seems a violation of my Human Rights to possibly deny me a Firearms Licence, just because someone made up a diagnosis. How best to resolve this issue, I have no idea. Perhaps someone could provide some insight into this matter.
What does your other half say?

you are correct this is not America we do not have the right to bear arms
Our laws are made by Parliament, and if they decide that you can have something, provided that you meet certain criteria, you have the right.
It is for the Police to administer and enforce the laws made by Parliament, not dictate who can do what.

No, not for firearms. A Firearm certificate is granted by the police, after they consider the merits of the case. Parliament have given them the right to decide and the means to make that judgement.

Have another read of the Act I linked before.
