Applying for a grid connection

Can someone give me the basics of applying for a grid connection in your own name rather than allowing a developer to do it for you? Is it feasible, how do you apply, what are the costs and timescales? Coming at it from complete ignorance

What little I know from reading this forum over the years, never hand over the grid connection to a third party. If you allow a developer to apply and be successful, you have handed over the trump card to them, and if they don't develop your site, it will prevent you from being able to get anyone else to develop your asset. Speak to your DNO and they will talk you through it, apparently, it is not all that complicated or hard.

Definitely do it yourself, but prepeare to be tearing your hair out, there's no rhyme, reason or consistency and they're extremely difficultto deal with (up our way anyway)

It really depends on the size of the connection you require.

Despite what is said above, this is a VERY specialist area for larger connections, and cannot be done by you. The document used, is written to ensure only a specialist can understand it.

However, you do not need to use a Developer, you can go directly to the Company who will do the work, they will also save you fortune, however not without some cost.

This is the type of Company that could help you: https://www.powersystemsuk.co.uk/

What size are you hoping for? I would suggest you use an independent agent to apply on your behalf if this is your route you want to go. unless you have good grasp of what you are doing though you can kiss goodbye to a few £1000

This type of harvesting sites and auctioning off has been going on since the start.

if they apply for the DNO then they’ve really done their homework and grid study. It'll cost them thousands to make the application but what they’ll be banking on is collecting enough to offset costs and get enough strategically placed that they can sell them on to desperate investors.

you can do the study yourself if you want to waste a couple of grand and a few days. You just won’t have the contacts and eventually the DNO will pressure you to give up the grid reserve.

I can’t see it being a win win situation for you if you do the application. Just don’t give them control over your land. Tell them they can make the application in your name and you’ll never see them again. Or, sell them your permission for a quick £2k with the proviso that you are involved with any decision. You can email the DNO the permission letter with the provision that you make any connections decision if the build is to go ahead.
