Applying liquid UAN now with dry forecast

Using more liquid this year, but still don't feel very expert about its various issues. Is there any issue continuing to put liquid UAN on now as the soil dries and with no rain in sight? Temperatures are obviously not very high. Carry on and get it all on or wait until rain appears on the horizon?

I’m going to split my n1 application into 2 and do a extra pass this year

Wheat is ready for some N now and it’s growing with forecast looking warm and soil temps rising but as it’s early it’s going to be a long season so think the little and often approach will pay

When did you last have rain? We haven't had for 10 days now I think. How worried would you be in our case given air temps? Spoke to one farmer today who said risk only really ramps up with hotter weather. Don't feel I know enough about this.

Whereas @Tom H is going on with 100 kg/ha. Amazing variety of approaches. We have been doing 70 kg/ha on winter barley (although may put DAP on taking it to 92kg/ha N). Forecast looks dry so I want a fair bit washed in when whatever rain is coming to come arrives.

My n1 would have been 70kg (1/3 of total). Will now be x2 35kg. Next week and then 3weeks later

VRA so that will vary of course but that’s the average

Really? Even if soil surface was pretty dry to 2 inches down in the day. That would give me heart to press on if so.

Certainly better than soild when dry

In all likelyhood we will get some rain in the not so distant future as well - it is February still !

And if we’d dont get significant rain at some point I think N will be the last of our worries come harvest

Crack on with it. There's enough moisture around to get it into the soil. If not, there soon will be. You will be busy enough on other jobs soon enough so get this one out of the way.

65mm rain here in Feb so far including 9mm this week. No plans to get a drill out yet.

Agronomist has just replied to say the same. That's the plan sorted then for the next few days.

If it stays that dry that n is not used then we have worse problem than the difference between an uan or urea
Urea on land with lots of calcium carbonate on the top are highest risk

I have grown the highest yields from only 25 mm each month from now to harvest

The worst conditions are when it is too cold and wet
2018 feb March

If it is dry then n on the earlier the better

Agree, but crop GS is also important if its damp enough to activate fertiliser.

currently my September planted wheat is tillering another couple of weeks before it is likely to think about moving on to gs 30 as days lengthen

all the current growth is just more leaf and more tillers 3 to 6 per plant

later planted is 2 to 3 tillers

fertiliser will get enough to wash it in in the next 2 weeks or so it has never been a problem in any previous dry feb and marchs over the last 40 years
dry now and crops get roots down so can access more n in the soil profile the good colour of crops mow is a clear indication they are growing well

I’m new to liquid fertiliser and worried about scorch! If it’s been frosty last night is it ok to spray on the frost or should I wait till it warms up??

Apply it to a dry leaf. The moisture from the frost or dew will make it stick to the leaf then when it dries out during the day it will look like you’ve just applied Roundup! You need to get as much as possible on the ground not the leaf.

Thanks! I will wait till later in the day when crop has dried out.
It sounds like it’s more of a issue sticking to the leaves than the cold night temperatures.
I’ve also read other posts saying I should try to keep a low pressure(under 2 bar?) to keep a stream rather than a spray coming out my fert nozzles.
