While it is easy to criticise and point to the many faults of modern farming we must appreciate that it is the result of centuries of economic evolution. The concept of the division of labour has brought about the situation of the few feeding the many and while there are some who are happy to grow vegetables on a large scale not everybody has the interest, inclination or ability to do so. In fact, most of us don't, including me, but I greatly admire those who do. This indifference means that despite the well intended attempts to get us out in the garden it is, unfortunately not going to happen on any large scale.
