Soil needed to backfill a pond that was dug by a previous owner of some amenity land near Wentnor. Delivery by tractor with tipper trailer due to grass slope access off road.

Pond size 18m x 8m oval and around 1m deep.

That's still 7x my estimate so I think it's safe to say I was way off! What sort of cost would I be looking at for that quantity? I wonder weather it'd be best to level using the surrounding soil? I have no experience in this area I might add.

I would just get someone with a digger to level it, with the surrounding soil, it would only take an hour or two to do it (well lets say half a day) bound to be someone near you with a machine either a 6 ton machine on a dump trailer or a JCB, be far better than trying to transport in soil.

This had crossed my mind. Maybe this is something the aforementioned 'Farmer Phil' could help with.

Whoever dug the pond probably used the excavated soil to landscape it. Ask the former owner who he used, and get the same operator to reinstate the site, especially if he can remember where he put the top soil...

When you remove all the surrounding topsoil and use it to fill your pond it results in the whole area growing nothing. We have done it many times under my grandfathers instruction and even as a child I could see it was bloody stupid.
In my opinion it can't sensibly be done without importing material. Someone local will want somewhere to tip some soil when they have a building job. Put the word out and it will get done. Insist it is soil only though. not concrete and all sorts of other rubbish.

Id worry if that was a possibility. Forgive my ignorance but why would nothing ever grow after? If it makes any difference it will only be seeded for grass.

That would make sense. The site is pretty uneven in places and the grass it quite patchy, maybe indicating the soil from the pond was spread over the rest of the plot and seeded?

Don't you just love the way that the general public always know more about a thing that they have no experience of and are prepared to argue the bit out. Want you to do 'a little job' that will only 'take a minute' then stubbornly argue when you try to point them in the right direction and inform them that its going to cost/use materials X 10 than they had expertly anticipated.

I'm sorry, have I upset you Shumungus? I havent argued with anyone. In fact, I wholly appreciate every bit of advice I have received so far.
