Are large livestock markets a problem?

Most markets rely on farmers or sons/ daughters of farmers to do the work in the market it's just what happens and they are the best for the job .
Why riles me is the way some of the workers are treated by other farmers/ buyers .
Just after foot and mouth I was so keen to see the markets get going again I went in and helped out for a few weeks till they could get their systems up and running again . One job I was asked to do was to keep the unloading bays clear, one vendor came in unloaded his lorry but refused to move it . Upon me asking him could he move it to the park thus leaving the loading bays clear his reply was ' people like me pay your wages so if I was you I would shut up "
I didn't waste my time telling him I was helping out for nothing !
Bugger that! Up here they'd end up on their arse !
To be fair it's a small market, everyone knows everyone pretty much, mutual respect across the board.
Get the odd idiot who thinks he's god, their soon bought back a peg or to :ROFLMAO:

A lot of the drovers can sort stock much better than the vendors !
I used to often take sheep in thinking I've sorted them right only for them to be re-sorted in market and end up with them sorted better .

I am guaranteed he was bidding for him self. Just doesn't look good when a worker of the market which is also a Director stands next to the Auctionere bidding. He could of been in the crowd.

I drive through Ruthin to sell in lambs in Stasaph with JonesPeckover... Something to do with the present auctioneers grandfather and my grandfather having a disagreement a long long time ago :ROFLMAO:
I've nothing again Ruthin myself, I'd sell there but we've always been treated fairly by jonespeckover for a long time now, and just don't feel the need to change with selling sheep

As a buyer myself I don't see a problem with it, he has to buy them somewhere I suppose the same as the rest of us. He might up the trade a bit which would be the only downside! Maybe I'm missing something in the morals of it.
If I was a seller I would be more than happy with more demand.

Not sure about that. One of the drover lads at Longtown buys a fair few store sheep,He always works in the play pen before they enter the ring.I think there is a bit of conflict of interest there.Store sheep are mostly sorted out to the buyers advantage, not the sellers. The big dealer buyers are the ones that insist on one or two get pulled out of the main group...............its never to the sellers advantage.

Back in the 60s and 70s I used to go with my dad to the Buxton sheep sales and they were held in a square just off the market place (it’s a car park now). The highlight of the day for me as a kid was the fish and chip shop round the corner. I don’t know if it was because of the cold weather or maybe memory plays tricks but they were the best fish and chips ever.

It concerns me that there seeems to be fewer buyers at markets . What buyers there are now buying on numerous accounts . One buyer in the north buys on 7 accounts. He has in effect removed 6 buyers from the sale ring It ends up with some buyers dominating markets ,
You'll always get dealers buying on multiple accounts but there is more of it at the moment as some aren't going due to Covid.

Has he not retired now?
Don’t know, I only get to drop and go at the market, in the first lockdown he was doing sentry duty at the market gate, can’t say I’ve seen him since but I wouldn’t really expect to under current circumstances. Don’t know how old he is but I’d have thought he was too young for retirement age..........although for what he does I don’t suppose he’d be missed.
Rumour has it that he’s the largest share holder in Oswestry market, wonder what will happen to those if he does retire.

The owners of Carmarthen mart (the local council) are asking for expressions of interest to run the mart,at least two local auctioneers have already expressed a interest in running the large mart.
Any idea who?
From what I’ve heard the previous debts have to be covered - including a few years of rent which was owed 🤷🏻‍♂️
