Are Ploughing Matches Under Threat?

And the number 8’s leading the pack. Don’t forget that we made you welcome at Scarcroft last year. Hopefully we will have a class that suits you better this October.

What you might need to explain on here is that in North Yorkshire, the three furrow conventional class has had a good following for years whereas it may well not exist in other parts of the country.

Another factor which must be taken into account is the fact that plots can be at a premium in some parts of the country. Sufficient land may not be available to run 3 or more furrow classes that need bigger plots.

Howard 150 - I agree on all points and thank you for inviting me back to Scarcroft !
Just to pick up on, and illustrate, some earlier points, I attach a photo of my rigg at Amotherby YFC, by no means perfect but I was placed 6 out of 11. Of the 5 which beat me, 4 were KV no. 8's, and one TCN. The plot below me was a young lad on a JD 2850 who had just invested in a new set of no. 8's, the one above me was the class winner, a gentleman of my vintage (mid 50's), on a IH 885 XL with a KV plough which he used to plough with as a young man. I myself am ploughing with my late fathers KV which has been in the family for 50 years. The point is that this class appeals to a wide spectrum catering for the 'Black Hole' between 1976 & 2000 (and World Style). I am sure that if it were promoted more it would gain popularity in other areas of the country.

I am delighted that you are officially making room for us at Scarcroft - thank you.

As I said back in 2018 matches may be under threat. It now seems that he powers that be will pay up to £50 a hectare for non I inversion tillage. So apart from root crop areas where more ploughing takes place, will match sites be harder to come by?
