Are references a thing of the past ?

I was asked about a reference for someone the other day, for a casual position

my answer was, apart from him being old, fat, lazy, not very good at his job & the fact that no one else likes working with him, there was a story going around that he was done years ago for rooting a horse

they didn’t put him on 🤣
well he cant help being old :cautious:

Btw for anyone whos unfamiliar with Aussie lingo 'rooting' means 'shagging'

Mate of mine went for a farm managers job. Gave list of references going back all 4 employers he’d had since college. They rang the oldest reference. Apparently he gave my mate a terrible reference. Put them off well and truly. Then rang mate directly and said “if you want a job I’ve just sacked our manager for thieving. Be here a week Monday” he’s been there ever since! 😂

As part of my role as “Team Leader”, Parks & Gardens, with our local Council, I was going through job applications for a position we had recently advertised ( I am on the interview panel next week ), doing the initial cull. ALL applications are via email & a jobs website. One application, when I downloaded his resume, was literally a photo of what looked like a piece of plywood, with a crayon scribble across it saying “can provide resume” 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️
for Fuchs sake, do they REALLY expect a response from that ? Needless to say, that one was culled immediately . .

It's interesting what is a complete turn off. Sometimes silly little things. Parking here so no one (e.g. postie) can get turned and has to back out is a big black mark for me, as is being late. (Or being too early, come to that)!

We had an application for a graduate scheme Lab Technician job, one of the applications had ‘I live in a caravan and like growing potatoes’ that one went in the bin but at least he could claim his job seekers allowance!

I know for a fact both of those folk used working here as a selling point to get the jobs.

I believe the rules say you can not give a bad reference. If that is the case there is no point asking for one.

CV fraud - and it is fraud - is a fast growing offence, or so I was told a few years ago.
Our fledgling comapny saw fit to employ a financial chap to grow it on, who was not all he seemed to be. I checked his background through a director check website, and spoke to previous companies he'd listed. Many were no more. He was an asset stripper, with fingers in many pies. None of them good.

So CV checks are as dodgy and unsubstantiated, as references seem to be. :(

At least he made a lasting impression on you. Nothing worse than being ignored… :)

Judging by his advert for staff I reckon @unlacedgecko might give a good reference!!
In a former life I used to write biannual appraisals for 20+ direct reports, and draft a further 10+. I always given a written reference if asked. Here's an example.

I also received a follow up phone call and was very happy to learn the subject gained full time employment on a grass based dairy.

Unfortunately horrendous management and toxic leadership meant she exited the industry 6 months later. How many new entrant staff members have been lost in similar circumstances?

Those employers with very high staff turnover would be well to reflect on the reasons why.

Are you saying someone who worked for you just fecked off with one of your dogs!!??
To be precise ..... he didn’t have a collie when he came so being nice I gave him a trained bitch and dog to use whilst he was working for me. During lockdown he bred a litter out of them, of course refusing to let me take a pup and gift it to a friend. He sold all of the pups for crazy money and pocketed the cash. When he left I tried to get the dog back off him (I’d got the bitch back) but he refused and basically made thinly veiled threats, and I was honestly worried I’d come home one day to find my dogs poisoned in the kennels or the barn set alight or something. I probably should have got the police involved but it wasn’t a very good time in life, through some of the things that had gone on I was in a pretty bad state with the sheep and was concentrating on fixing things which had been run into the ground when he was here. End of the day he needed the dog for future work and so I hope and assume it was well cared for. It was a real good dog.

……. ……. Is a total twunt!!!! Do not feckin employ that useless wànker!!
if Carlsberg did job references

I have written words to that effect on character references for court before.

"Soldier X is a large drain on the admin time of his chain of command. This is the 4th time this year I have been to court with him. If he is awarded a custodial sentence today he will be discharged from the Army. This will be no great loss."
