Are the General public completely oblivious to the dangers of large farm machinery?

This, exactly. If farmers started doing this enough, it might make the council sit up and realise that it's not appropriate to have them in the middle of fields. Get the details and do it properly, but shut it for every time you need to "in the interests of public safety".

I have a feeling a Risk Assessment would outweigh a Councils " Standard Operating Procedure" and form filling in a Court any day of the week.

Even though you don't need to do it, it's common sense.

Working equipment and the public in the same place is a recipe for disaster.

So why as a group you seem to love being in groups don’t you complain to the council to get them to sweep it surely if enough complain it will get done,
You can be certain that complaints go in on a regular basis, one of ourgroup is ex Local highways and a complete expert on what is wrong. But can you imagine the ourptrage from car drivers if the council wasted precious resources sweeping, resurfacing, trimming, cycle paths which nobody ever uses 😀

Buy yourself a bike that’s fit for purpose then.

That’s the short answer, but yes I have done - and why my road bike has proper tires fitted.

Oh, and the A9 cycle path is about 10yds from the carriageway - there’s no way that detritus from one ends up on the other.
Dont you believe it and if it is away from the road all the more excuse not to clear and trim it

Of course you can, you tell the Council when and why your closing the footpath. Do you think they are likely to refuse ?
Bxxxxcks !

Temporary or permanent closures/diversions
If you're a contractor or a landowner, you can ask us to temporarily divert or close a public right of way for between one day and six months to allow for site works to be carried out safely, or to hold an event. Extensions may be possible, but you'd need to apply for a further closure order.
And how much do they charge for this service? They will need to know dates and times etc. Fancy booking harvest 3 months in advance?

Probably not, but going to the council to seek a closure order is hardly the same as doing what the guy suggested - simply putting out a sign saying it was closed, rather than going through the proper channels. That would be an illegal closure and we all know some officious rambler would kick up a stink, more hassle than it’s worth.
By the time you smell the stink the combine will be elsewhere and the signs gone.

I had I not so quiet word with a cyclist a few weeks ago , I overtook him on the sprayer then he tucked in behind me and follow so close his face was close to my rear camera I only see his face on my screen . He must have been under my booms . Decided not to hit the brakes but come slowly to a stop and explain his errors to him . 🤬
Bloke round here does it to the tractors, you see him going full Tour de France to catch up then tucks in behind the the back wheel.

2 of us in cab one day so opened the back window and shouted to him to feck off.

He had headphones in and didn’t hear. 🤦‍♂️

Yesterday my missus had to reverse her car to turn it around. Where she was reversing I regularly back my pickup and triaxle around the same spot to give an idea of how "tight" it is.
She carefully gave the roll of land drain lying on the floor about 10' of clearance so she didn't hit it and drove her car into the ditch instead.
Her car is one of those diddy DS3 Citroens.
Three years ago we were putting up a new shed and the guy helping us is polish and was living a couple of miles away, his van was playing up some asked me to take him home and collect him , as the journey was over a very congested route I told him to take my pick up so I didn't spend an hour queueing, that evening my wife parked where I normally do, next morning my chap parks behind her and I happened to see he did so moved it so she didnt back into the truck felt bad afterwards as should have given her more credit, next day he again parks behind her but I was already working in the shed so didnt notice, yes she walked by the truck got into her car and backed into the truck . 🙃

I had the header trailer on my maxxum infront of my mates combine, flashing lights, hazzard lights the lot. 3 cars did exactly the same thing come hurtling up to me up the grass verge to get around me to be met by the combine who just had to sit there and wait, they dont engage their brains.
Admitting to three offences in one sentence.
The header trailer is part of the combine, it is illegal to tow an unbraked trailer of that weight.
It is illegal to drive with hazard lights on, they should only be used if your stationary.
maybe not illegal but a tractor is not a suitable escort vehicle.

1, your assuming the header trailer is un-braked, I’ve seen plenty with overrun braking systems.
2, your assuming he was driving with the hazard lights on, I read it as he was stationery blocking the road (or at least trying to).
3, you are correct that it isn’t legal to use a vehicle that is towing something as an escort. However you can use an unladen tractor as an escort.

Imo Gordon Brown and Tony Blair have created a lost generation of over educated idiots. unemployable, work shy, debt ridden, irresponsible graduates of university. Have not had to hone skills of common sense, responsibility and understanding or appreciation of areas outside their own tiny bubble in the practical world. These are the people sucking the life out of the economy over burdening it with pointless self created jobs leaching off the providers. We are now in a situation of a massive shortage of people to get real jobs done. All education is not good
I blame Mrs Thatcher for many of societies ills, remember her “there is no such thing as society”, speech? Surely that is when the rot set in, the abandonment of the post war social contract. Every man for himself and devil take the hindmost

I would go back a lot further than that (1880's) when schooling was made compulsory for 5 to 10 year olds; not for altruistic reasons but as a means of baby sitting the children in order to get the mothers out to work.
