Are we farming through a "boom period"?

George Eustace replied in the HoC that we are experiencing a "boom period" in British farming. Is he right?

If we are in a boom, god help us when the bust comes!! Record prices for lamb... yes but record prices for pretty much everything I go to buy, for business or domestic use, its called inflation... Do these clowns not grasp that record breaking prices does not make a boom, a boom requires record breaking margins and I can see those in many UK ag sectors right now?? :scratchhead:

He's got a point, in that when the pound fell after the Brexit vote, output prices rose and farm profits improved.

I think the benefit from that's now gone with all the inputs skyrocketing and we're pretty much back to where we were, with farm gate prices stagnating and the bps going.

The future looks far from rosy.

he could actually be right, when 75% of us have packed up, and food costs go through the roof, the last 25% might have a boom time.

l have given up trying to guess, which planet our guv comes from, could say all politicians, there isn't a lot between them. Rather think the planet might be called 'la la land', and they believe life is a fairy tale, if it wasn't so serious, it would be laughable.

Rather expect any businessman, that deals with the public, can see, like we can, there's going to be an almighty crash, and its speeding towards us, and l don't think its any different in the EU, our elected politicians, are unable to see any further, than the ends of their noses, which might be stuck up another mp's arse, if a lot of what we read is true.

The worst part, is we have to rely on them, to get us out of the shite.

He spouted the same line at Devon County Show last week.

Do you think he realises he's not only embarrassing himself and his government when he makes absurd claims like this, but it also makes it worryingly obvious to all that he has no real understanding of the industry?

Or he genuinely thinks we're all fools?!

For us, a boom time would mean positive stuff happening the other side of the farm gate. A new abattoir opening. A young mechanic appearing on the scene. A chance to rent some farm buildings that hadn't been given PP for housing. I see none of that, rather it all continues to go tits up.

Talking in our local farm shop this morning, told the boss lady how nice the new yoghurt was they have started stocking, she replied that the farm it comes from can no longer deliver as the fuel cost has become prohibitive. That's not boom, that's bust.

perhaps l was wrong, the penny might be dropping
2 senior cabinet ministers resigning this afternoon, should mean a change at the top, whether it will, remains to be seen, or whether a change will make any difference.
But the problem isn't confined to our ########mp's. The press haven't really clicked about how bad things are, its as if a pretend 'its not happening', and it will go away, attitude prevails.
Whatever would happen, if NATO and Russia got into a scrap, just about finish the job off, in more ways than 1.
Posted on here, for a long time, things are rapidly changing, and we will have to adapt to them, might well happen quicker than l thought.
Recessions come and go, always have, and always will, but this coming one, is the result of the ideal storm, coming after several years, of plastering over the cracks, and its been made, potential of increasing the depth of it. The scary bit, is what idiotic politician, is actually capable, of seeing us through it.

The problem with politicians, across a lot of the democratic world, is that is now a career, rather than a desire to do the best, for their country, and their politics reflect the position, of the party that selects them first. sad.
