My Landlord in the village won't be happy. He's just finished having an ancient brick wall repaired and pointed around his park. Now he has a tree through it

Only in the last hour and lasting about 20 mins

Various big tree limbs down through electric and fixed fences

Without wishing to diminish those personal tragedies that will happen with any natural event there really does seem to be an ever increasing hyperbole from the media over events like this. 'The worst storm since 87 etc.' The map I posted yesterday morning clearly showed the track of the storm but they were still threatening damnation here in Wales where it didn't even rattle the slates. Despite that clear map from the Met Office BBC Wales still had a reporter down in Cardiff trying to 'bull up' a non event into a crisis!

Even the Met Office TV forecasts were quite restrained last night but the TV News and Newspapers (no doubt - I don't read them) were trying to make a drama out of what is a fairly normal event. I turned on Breakfast TV to see some reporter twit down in Dover stood in a bit of nice morning sun with cars going up and down the prom trying to make out how bad it was.

Again apologies to those that have suffered but the build was hysterical nonsense of the media's making.

Fair comments.
We are acquainted with one of the met office directors and he was involved yesterday in deciding what level of warning to advise the government at.
They have the problem of the over hype of the media to contend with, plus the possible variations in the weather pattern - over cautious and they're damned, as they are if they underestimate the situation.
I suspect they hit it about right but the media 'blew' it up rather!

The severity and seriousness is, of course, a lot more because it affects the over heated, under practical folks of London and the South East. You could probably face similar winds regularly if you are in the Hebrides or a trawler man but what do they care ?

There is at least one occasion every year when winds cause serious damage north of the central belt of England and it never gets a mention except perhaps in a local rag. The hype over this has been ridiculous, no wonder half the country can no longer think for their selves.
Apt name for the storm though, Helper and keeper of the hopeless. add' lead by the useless:rolleyes:

Just like a normal wet miserable day here.Ok the tree branches are blowing about a bit but not enough to take the leaves off.

Gusted up to 106mph here at around 7am, roller shutter doors blown in, loads of trees down , power off. wind dropping now.

But on the flipside no harm at all in being prepared for it. It probably saved lives and could have been worse had there not been heaps of warning. Damned if you do..
