So the thinking is that calving at 2 years increases the milking lifetime at both ends ?
Can't remember all the questions from the climate check but I assume longevity is picked up through herd replacement rates?

You gain an extra lactation and have less non producing stock on farm basically.

CF is worked back to Carbon/kg milk.
So, extra production from less total stock would be favourable in this example.

That is the good thing about this process, everybody gets specific to them results. Rather than a generic list.

Whether that will get to Carbon 0. I have no idea. Others have tried and quietly moved away from the ideal.

But if they're eating carbon sequestrating low input grassland that milkers can't utilise and living to over 10 years when the average lactations is 4 in the UK when calving at 2 how does that add up?

If more milk per animal and not keeping as many is good for cf then number of lactations should trump calving age shouldn't it ?

If the average lactations in the UK is 4 then a cow doing 8 lactations is better for cf even if she calved at 30 months. By my thinking you've saved keeping another heifer for 18 months?

Hey I don't know I'm not one of the boffins😁. Casualties and cull rate was in the thing as I recall.

Run some numbers out of interest.
So say 100 cows at 10% rr is 10 per year, calving at 3 so 30 Youngstock per 100. 10@300days 10@600days 10@900days. Total stock days 18k
25% rr is 25 per year, calving at 2 so 50 per 100. 25@300days 25@600days. Total stock days 21k

Assume 8k herd average. Hfrs doing 6k.
15 extra lactations at 6k is 90k extra liters.
Which is 11 extra cows production equivalent per year.
Now I dunno if you times that by 2 or 3 to compare, so split the difference at 2.5 is 27 per 100.
More milk, less stock.

First bit agrees with you guys
Second bit agrees with me.

Big article (page 3 no less) of yesterday's Times on Arla & their trial on housed herds using a farm in Princes Risborough.

Each cow to wear a "fitbit" style necklace to monitor her activity 24/7 and to give a "happiness/wellbeing" score.

Results due early summer 2022

It better show that, #canofworms if the results tell us that they’re unhappy. At least arla is involved with the trial and not some militant animal rights group. Perhaps they will be able to come up with the ’right’ result.
