Please explain.

Madness - means doing something like running round with nothing but pants on your head ;-)

Or do you mean explain what actually effects the two prices..... Could take a while!

Put it this way, if the uk economy and the euro zone hadn't been in the changing state that it was (which prob was part of the drive behind the purchase) and the exchange rate had gone the other way, do you realistically think Arla can actually effect either price, against market forces...??? Clearly Not given recent prices!!!!

The none co ops in the uk will pay as little as they can for milk simple the less they pay the more profit they make? All agreed so far?

The only thing to make a company pay more for milk is the risk of losing its suppliers? Or direct action against them sometimes.

Arla pay out what they get in across Europe, evenly amongst its members.

Around 2010-2012 this was substantially than the uk market was, but for fear of losing suppliers muller/wiseman had to take a hit on their own profits to return more to their farmers to retain them.

This is now working the opposite way round where Arla are across Europe making less , paying a lower price hence muller can here even though market returns are strong in the uk.

Good or bad Arla effect the UK price, especially in the short and medium term. across a longer period say 5 years it may average out though.

Rubbish..... Arla don't worry about loosing a supplier at all!!! The contract protects them from that (plus a bit of marketting/doom and gloom around the potential notice period).

Their supply makes little to no difference to the price they pay, but keep telling yourself it does if it makes you feel better.

Arla Foods dairy company is proposing to relocate or terminate 22 jobs at its Lockerbie factory.

The farmer-owned company is planning to transfer a proportion of its butter operation to a factory in Westbury.

South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has expressed 'deep concern' over the proposals:

I am deeply concerned at the prospect of 22 job losses in Lockerbie. There has been a lot of investment in the plant in recent years and it is hugely important for the many local farmers whose milk goes to the site. But most importantly it is a major employer in the Lockerbie area. Any jobs losses will be a tragedy for those affected and a real blow to the local economy at what is a very uncertain time for many companies. If any of the current workforce do have to leave, I will be strongly urging Arla to avoid at all costs compulsory redundancies.

– Colin Smyth MSP
The company still plans to produce Scottish butter and whey butter at its Lockerbie plant, and the proposals will not affect milk collection from local farms.

Jim Grieve, site director at Arla’s Lockerbie site said:

We are looking to minimise the impact of the proposal through a variety of measures. We hope to be able to transfer 12 colleagues to other vacant roles at our site, as well as look at whether we can fill vacant positions at other Arla sites, including Westbury. At the same time, we are considering applications for voluntary redundancy from the site. We are committed to doing everything we can to support our colleagues at this time.

As a farmer-owned dairy company, our mission is to add value to every litre of milk from our farmer owners and this proposal will enable both Lockerbie and Westbury sites to focus and develop their relevant dairy production expertise going forward.

Interesting, and more specifics?

With other processor's inefficiency isn't really farmers worry, with co ops it very much is.

@Cows 'n grass that block is going to be a beggar to hold when you want to grate some cheese to top the lasagne etc :nailbiting: :wideyed: :D

It is a good service though(y) just have to make sure any soft cheeses ordered are in a separate box inside the main box to get the better of the delivery drivers:whistle:

Arla are to invest £37.5 million into their factories this year from a worldwide budget of £225 million.
Muller said last year they were investing £100 million in the UK into "operational, innovation and marketing".

Nice to see investment and development in the UK market.

Good going @Cows 'n grass

Is that a Waitrose butter in the background? If you shop there occasionally and they are on special offer, the stronger Waitrose cheeses (Arla North Tawton iirc + nice tasting cheeses) work out about the same as Arla farmer price without the delivery charge. In their recent January offer they also had Tickler on promotion as well(y)

I may have bought one or two packs:whistle:

ps did you see the article in the Arla magazine (before Christmas) about calf jackets and that Cosy Calf offer a discount to Arla members. Just quote your membership number.
