It's a fair assessment of the situation and the one thing you can be sure of is that the Conservative party will do whatever it takes to ensure it's own survival. Even if that means selling out NI or the whole of the UK, as they will see it as a price worth paying. It's worth remembering that the very fact we are having this discussion is because Cameron for reasons best known to himself, was so frightened of the inroads UKIP was making into his party that he put the prospect of an EU referendum in his manifesto. This, despite the desire for one barely registering any interest with the general population. :banghead:
I honestly believe the diminishing band of rank and file Tory party members are nothing more than a collection of village idiots. Coherent policies need input from outside the Westminster bubble.

And yet UKIP gained 13% of the vote in the 2015 general Election( I believe) which rather suggests that any lack of interest might be because they were not asked previously.

Why do the dup oppose the idea of ni being different to the rest of the uk so much?

They are very happy to be different when it comes to abortion laws and same sex marriage!

Ni staying in customs union could be very lucrative if the opportunities are taken

How could it be lucrative when you put obstacles in the way of 70% of your exports?

70% of Northern Irelands export go to England, Scotland or Wales. Keeping NI in the EU whilst the rest of the UK left would mean a customs border with the UK and would ruin the economy of NI.

The UK could of course have levy free trade on goods of Northern Ireland origin moving to England scotland, Wales. But is it supposed to maintain a customs border in the other direction, meaning that they charge EU rates on goods going across? How on Earth could the UK ever be expected to keep to that?

Dire circumstances might soon force unionists into some sort of united approach to events

But @nivilla1982, doesn’t that article PROVE my point in my earlier reply to @The Agrarian . You (Unionists) are a stone in London’s expensive Italian leather shoe, and they just about put up with you.... (boil on that nasty pimple right on the pinnacle of that protruding Tory arse bone)
You (Unionists) have zero importance to 2018 United Kingdom strategically. You are an absolute drain on cash which could be used very nicely in the shires and the boroughs of London to further underpin and enhance the already fixed electoral system to keep the Tory gentry in power for ever and ever amen.....
Furthermore NI has no strategic military geographic importance to the people who matter in London. The location, width and depth of Lough Swilly is now and forever in future of no further value.

What you need now is a new unionist strategy ..... did not Peter Robinson fly the canary in the coal mine for you recently ........????????????

Whither the next BIG unionist strategic leader for the “new normal”????

The default unionist NO, NO, NO has run firmly aground.....

Skip to the video of the PM's statement to the house. I've no doubt that a great deal of work has been done already of many details. You can see the woman is doing her damnedest to get things sorted in a way that pleases as many people as possible. If she doesn't succeed, it wasn't for the want of effort, patience and perseverance. It's a pretty impossible task to come to an arrangement with the Paisley-inspired EU representatives, including Ian Richard Kyle Coveney, who seem to be the ones saying no, no, no to anything and everything.

This customs border down the Irish sea sounds like project fear...

Why can ni not trade freely with gb and also the eu?

Last week Barnier wanted only checks on 100% of livestock and foods coming from gb to ni to confirm they met eu standards.

The funny thing about that proposal is it would be the best case scenario for the people of Northern Ireland. It would genuinely create a host of wealth and opportunity and reinvigorate the area. None of the now pretty passive middle class would look for a UI.

The DUP don't care about that though, their primary concern is the union.
The current stance is understandable from that perspective but is just hammering more nails into their own coffin.
How loyal will their sizable farming voters be when subs disappear?

Who pays the "subs" ?

How about the UK stops paying for 25 countries on the take ?

We'll have our own policies, our own governent, our own rules and own laws. If HMG don't fo as they are told they'll get voted out .. at least I hope so.

Don’t think so. Why did this bunch get voted back in so last year ?

We have a trade Secretary who knows nothing about trade, a former brexit Secretary who would agree terms with the Eu on a Friday and deny it on Sunday on tv, a Northern Ireland Secretary who didn’t know they voted on sectarian grounds there !

Taking back control !

God help us

Actually it IS taking back control.

The problem you have is everyone else knew these people were not acting in the UK's interest for the past 40 years.

The solution is democracy .. vote them out and get someone who can do the job.

God knows why there is this fixation about Northern Ireland .. there are 65 million people in the UK and it doesn't all hang on a few people who can't decide where they live.

You clearly have no idea how the EU works.
