Not even sure why @bobk and @robs1 do not get themselves signed for lorry driving.
bobk would truly broaden his horizons from Staffordshire, like to Worcestershire, while robs1 could listen to talksport or times radio and the pair of them could just eat Yorkies all day long.
Kings of the road the pair of them.
Strangely enough I have more than enough work thanks, but remind me how many unemployed we have in the uk, I'm sure some of those could use a job, or do we have 1.5 million that don't want to work,

If you say so, but surely if you cut back on the amount of time pontificating about others you would easy fit a load in.

I think the hassle of driving a truck these days put people off. Getting a license is time consuming and expensive, medicals and ongoing courses just to keep it. Then when you do start you basically have no control over where you go and when you'll be home, which is an issue f you have a family.
Then there's the fact you are constantly monitored with Tachos, telematics dash cams and increasing driver facing cams. Add to that all the idiots on the road trying to kill you, shippers and receivers treating you like shite and a general dislike from the public for all things truck and you start to see why it doesn't appeal.
Plus everyone says it's a matter off time before all trucks are automated and wont need drivers LOL.

I wonder if anyone on here has had experience of getting a medical, driver training and passing an HGV test in the last year. During that time many drivers have retired and some have died and by all accounts the DVLA with the help of the medical profession have ensured that the issue of new driving qualifications has almost dried up. Is this fake news or has anyone experience or accurate statistics?

You said the cost of running a car was too prohibitive, you dont need to own a car to drive a truck. You do need a licence of course but you didnt say it costs too much to get a licence. I have pa licence to use sprayers, I don't need to own a self propelled to drive someone else's. Remind me again the number of unemployed in this country, now tell me again we cant find a decent number with driving licences that could be trained to drive trucks. It's funny how remainers say that leave voters blame everything on the EU well it looks like remainers now blame everything on us leaving the EU
I’ll type this slowly in the hope you will be able to read it.
Because the cost of running a car is prohibitive young people are increasingly not bothering to obtain a licence . Why would they if they’ve no intention of driving ? To become an hgv driver is a huge step up from driving a car. These days it is a highly technical and skilled job, not suited to everyone or within the financial grasp of everyone.
So,take all the unemployed with a driving licence and then find suitable unemployed to train as hgv drivers. You can discount a lot of them because they are numpties.you can discount the ones with medical problems You can discount a lot more because they don’t want to do it,or are you talking forced Labour, not very clever if you are then putting them in charge of 40 t of moving machinery.
As for the reference to the EU I didn’t mention the EU once.

And yet they can afford to go to uni to get an ology they will never use and is of no use, they will end up in debt and many end up in a poorly paid job or on the dole
A few personal experiences, guy who rents one of my sheds son went to uni on a photography course , now works in the local Iceland store, wife has a friend whose two sons went to uni, cant remember what they studied but one is unemployed (2 years ) the other worked for the national trust inputting data, lost his job due to covid. Of course the second family are middle class and driving a lorry would be well beneath them, apparently having no job isnt , contrast that with my two kids, we have indeed become a strange country.

Just a thought! How many 7.5 tonne trucks would you need to do the jobs? No HGV licence for those less regs and virtually anyone can drive them!

A young lad with HGV class C1 in his forties was recently diagnosed diabetic class 1. He has been stabilised but cannot get his licence back as the DVLA are on strike. He has been on full pay from his employer but will soon have to look for alternative employment. The NHS/DVLA are polls apart and are ruining people`s lives.

A lot of them. .. 4 tons payload at best vs 26 tons (ish) for an artic. And basically the same rules and regs.
Plus less than half the working age population have a licence that covers them to 7.5 tons as since 97 you have to pass a size specific test.

What does the indigenous population actually do then ?
Shortage of dentists ( a very well paid job )
Shortage of NHS staff
Shortage of lorry drivers
Shortage of tradesmen ( builders etc )
Shortage of veg/ fruit pickers.......

Yet 70 million on a small island.🤔

I would suggest that we all ought to have banners telling the public that buying local and seasonal no one will go hungry. We might have to wipe our b##s with a dock leaf or two or the local rag but at the moment it is summer and there should be plenty of food to go round in local rural areas.
