Artic trailer Air

Most likely find with this heavy haulage unit the " second" fifth wheel will be a ball bearing turntable , essentially a massive bearing and not a detachable fifth wheel in the normal sense .
Some heavy haulage units the main fifth wheel is this ball bearing type and the neck never leaves the unit in the traditional sense so the outfit is one entity when coupled to the bed.
Not the ones I’ve seen you can take the dolly out and run just the trailer if not too heavy that another axle will not be required they even have lights on the dollies

Well I know it’s in a foreign land but we use them over here a Jeep dolly, so if we assume that a tractor towing a dolly with a artic trailer is infact two trailers and the rear one cannot carry a load how do the heavy haulage boys do it, or is it because they run under STGO and can swerve a fair lump of the traffic laws us mere mortals have to complie with
Some good weight transfer on that dolly too.

wasn't harping on about anything just stating that it was a good event and judging by some of the comments in the thread about a farmer getting stopped with a tractor and trailer a few more should have went  the NAAC "expert" may have an opinion but that's all it is, because it is still legal to tow ex wagon trailers with a dolly as long as it can't be removed classing it as a turntable trailer, as with any farm trailers we don't need MOTs but common sense to make sure what ever trailer your towing is road worthy and legal with brake/lights should be the norm, sadly it isn't with some people :stop: you yourself have bought ex wagon trailers and cut them down and welded in drawbars, personally I would rather tow with a dolly but each to their own, maybe you just can't reverse a dolly trailer
I have used them for 25 years and would not post to any thread if I had no idea. I had a 220hp unimog bought new to tow a tri axle Andover low loader. All I will say to those who want to continue using them is whatever you do use a twin wheels on the bogie and not super singles, having experienced a blowout at 50mph you then realise the pivot point of the drawbar connection to the towing vehicle is where all the trouble lies. The natural design is for the load to spread off onto two axles below the kingpin for stability under all conditions. Those that say to weld up the 5th wheel release bar are just exploiting a loophole in a ruling probably brought about by the death of somebody.

The trailer will have "anchor lock " brake chambers and need a minimum of 5 bar air supply to release the brakes in order to move it .
Draining the air will only apply the brakes as it is spring pressure that applies the park brake and you need the 5 bar minimum supply to overcome the spring pressure.
I would avoid fitting any kind of taps on airlines too as someone will eventually, and inevitably, forget to turn them back on and end up on the road with brakes stuck on or dragging or worse of all no brakes at all at some point.
It will be moveable when the red line is disconnected if the tanks are charged by using the " shunt " ( blue button next to red park brake button) .

I have an artic trailer with no brakes. Plug both lines in the tractor and brakes release, unplug both pipes and brakes lock on until all the air has been released from tanks then can tow without plugging the lines in…. But when all coupled up and I put my foot on the brakes nothing happens? It doesn’t have a shunt valve just a manual cable operated ratchet hand brake. Any ideas on how to get the brakes working?

Have this trailer brakes ever worked correctly for you?
Try unplugging 1 pipe at a time,
If trailer up to pressure disconnecting yellow line to release brakes. Disconnecting red line should apply brakes.
I tried to move a trailer once that had pipes swapped for some reason. Was an HGV drag trailer so maybe had been done for security when dropped in a lay-by as would only suits its own lorry without swapping pipe fittings which we did in end
