Asbestos or Asbestos Cement Sheets

Would 12 year old be the safe stuff ,

There is a date when new sheets were all made asbestos free, not sure what it is but around the late 1980's

extract from the Asbestos Information Centre http://www.aic.org.uk/advicenotes.htm

Asbestos was so widely used in the 20th century that we can be confident that the majority of buildings built before 1985 probably have some asbestos in them. Since the use of asbestos in building products was not finally prohibited until 1999 we can only be sure a property is asbestos free if it was built after 2000
So anyone working on a building erected prior to 2000 may be at danger of being exposed to asbestos fibres unless a check for asbestos is carried out before the work starts.

The cut off date is the year 2000, asbestos was banned in UK manufacturing in the late 80's I believe but it could be legally imported and used for much longer.

The tests are cheap and usually fairly quick.

My experience with asbestos. Father in law passed away two years ago after suffering asbestos related cancer, he was a fit, healthy man and brave beyond belief till the end. I would not have wished his suffering on the worst person in the world.

The cause?
A single fibre of asbestos was found in his stomach, this had been there since 1968 (they were able to trace the fibre back with amazing detail) when a building that had an asbestos roof was demolished on the farm he worked on at the time. Although he was not involved in the building coming down, he was doing the milking in shed next door. This was his only potential exposure to asbestos that he could think of.

The stuff is so deadly that even hitler banned it in the 30s, why we were still allowed to use it for another 30-40 years is beyond me.

I have to stress the precautions everyone has to make before risking any type of exposure to this dreadful stuff.

Silly question, but how did he swallow it, if it was found in his stomach. What I have read, suggests that the main cause of asbestos related cancer is inhalation of dust particles.

Over the years, through ignorance, have on several occasions assisted with the removal of asbestos from various properties.

A contact in the Construction Industry, put me in touch with someone who is involved with Asbestos Removal.

OFF THE RECORD.
He told me, that the current regulations were a farce, and purely designed to provide HMG with revenue. Wherever it ended up, it was simply buried, and in the meantime had been transported half way across the UK, potentially exposing thousands to the threat, as in his opinion, there as no such thing as a sealed Skip.

The more you move it about, the more people you expose to the risk.

Best option in his view, keep wetting the sheets, while you cut and remove the retaining nails or bolts.

Stack on a trailer and take away.

Dig a hole as deep as possible, and as far away as possible and bury.

Asbestos was mined, came from the earth, and will return to the earth, whether in an "official site" or buried locally.

Which option would you take?

You are correct, the vast majority of asbestos related cancers are of the lungs (cant remember %), which is why he was particularly unlucky. It could have been as simple as a fibre of asbestos floating in the air as he was talking to his cows, land on his lips, or his sleeve then wipe his mouth, etc. It then gets caught in saliva and ingested.

As you say, the current rules are a disgrace. Made by people who do not understand. Remember the funeral pires for the foot and mouth? Was the main cause of the spread.

The date is November 1999, it's safe to assume that any roofing product before then that looks like it is cement based will contain chrysotile asbestos and treated accordingly...testing a sample to confirm this is not expensive, removal and licences disposal is not cheap.

Should have told him they are all fibre cement, the question is what is the fibre?

I cut asbestos sheets with a 9'' angle grinder in the 70's and 80's without a dust mask.Looked like a snowman when I had finished.Maybe I ought to book a World Cruise before it's too late.:nailbiting:
