Auto darkening helmet.

Do the welding experts on here know if auto darkening welding helmets "wear out" ?

My helmet (which is over ten years old) does not darken quick enough after arcing resulting in very sore eyes!!

I have tried adjusting tinting knob with no better results, it has been great up until the last few months. I am a bodger not an engineer so not welding every day!!

If you are suggesting replacing with new, what is the best make for a farmer welder on a budget?

Have you tried cleaning the solar receiver, otherwise chuck it quick as you will soon ruin your eyes

Will start by emphasizing I am just a bodger too, my helmet did that, replaced battery helped a little, when I was putting it back together I noticed a little bit of splatter was stuck into the outer. Just in front of the sensor. I dug it out with a scribe and shaved it smooth with a blade and now it's better than ever, it even darkens when welding behind things which it didn't before. Mine is just a cheapo with no knobs, just an on button. The only one that fits my bald head without moving...

Mine died, i was going to try changing the battery, soldering job, ended up not getting round to it, new one helmet i seen somewhere for £30 so i just got it, far better than the old one too

With the price of them now its not worth arc eye .as said theres some good lids about for under £50

Weldability phantom active, good mask, I have one in workshop and one in van for on site, gets covered in mud, rained on dropped ect and it's still going. Only had it 3 years though

Just pop your plastic cover off the front and give the solar panel a good clean and put a new plastic on the front... people seem to think if they're caked in weld spatter and thick dust from the weld that they'll still work like new they need looking after

Any of them will be fine,pick whatever suits your budget

Lids have come on a long way in last 15 year

I got a parweld xr915 i think it is,its ok but the grind switch doesnt work anymore

Well, I blew the budget this morning and ordered a new helmet and gloves.
I hope what I have paid included my TFF discount!!!
