Autosteer and 3m combi drill

Looking to start spring drilling soon, with a new to us 3m Kvernland accord DA power Harrow combi and recently purchased a tractor with auto steer. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to go about using the GPS for a beginner? Fields are 10 acre average with not many straight hedges, is a curved AB line the best option or use a straight AB line? Thanks

Straight 👍 use the curve lines when drilling the headland.

If your only on the free signal sf1 or similar I would definitely put a tape over the width of the drill to check it’s exact width. I personally wouldn’t run a curve until you get the hang of it and a feel for how accurate it is going to be. If you have a wrong width and a curve you could be unhappy when it emerges.

Sprayers, fert spreaders work best in straight lines. I always do tramlines straight. With auto steer, the lines in the middle have nothing to do with the hedges. Well, I can’t recall ever having a straight hedge.
The most important thing is to have a strong signal before you start in the centre. And in my case I mean 20 minutes work away from trees.
After you’ve started, avoid trees. In fact, with auto steer, you become obsessed with trees.
Oh, did I mention trees?

Are you 24 m trams?
I’ve had some big field In the past and you soon get good at your 8 times table to check your traming at the correct time. So for ease you want the tramline at zero, if you started at the edge for eg, then first tram at 4 by the time you get into the 80’s, your always having to account for the 4. Then with the bigger field, when I got into the hundreds, it kept me on my toes.
You have to be thinking ahead for seed and fuel, as if you leave for seed and go under trees, you’ll go back and be a meter out. You’ll Re centre fir that but over the next half hour the system with be re adjusting. Think 🌳.
If I knew I was going to need seed I would leap up the field a bit, bung in a tramline, go for seed, then steer from the tramline tonthe last work, while the system re adjusted. If you start re cantering with an inaccurate signal, your buggered

You need to know where the correction comes from. For eg, green star is Cornwall so the receiver needs to see (from leics) south, so actually, I could go quite up to the south side of trees, but the north side oh no :nailbiting:
Annoyingly, having been here for 7 years, I still haven’t quite worked out the safe side yet🥴, and now I have a top con too which behaves differently

We have Trimble rtk autosteer.

Trees never been a issue for me.

If signal does drop out it changes to x fill and you carry on.

Must be a green star thing.

Been drilling under trees with it today.

Ok, for me, it’s all about, wait for it....
Trees
So, no, I would do the headland first; steering, forget the auto steer, as you get a few meters in (away from 🌳), the signal will become correct so then find a line you like in the centre
Are you running a 3000 or 6000 receiver? Although it sounds like your using an old itc if your signal is so bad for dropping out! I use to drill beet with a 3000 on sf1 and never had an issue, 6000 is in a different league.

Yeah on 24m tramlines, no need to worry about big field.. biggest here is 17 acres! Average about 10!

Got a new top con last year. I can’t say that likes trees either. I also use a Trimble in the sprayer (mainly as my memory) but I also notice that shifts about - under trees.
You want to get a bigger sprayer if your spending that much time under trees 😂, unless you’re spraying in an orchard 🤔
