We did a late reseed and just beat the rain. Used a big tandem flat roller to save time which capped it and result is a bit iffy.
This came today so

we don’t repeat the exercise next year with a flat roller and expect a different result.

Locally grass is often combi drilled into wheat stubbles as soon as the straw is off. I solo mine, roll, leave for a month. Drill cross over, then roll. Don't like to plough asbit leaves it too soft.

I suppose when you plough rather than direct drilling you bury out of site that that helps prevents capping , the turf and roots , I was surprised how much drier direct drilled land is over cultivated land after seeding

i think the importance of rolling, and firm seed bed, have been 'relaxed' in recent times, especially if using contractors, very often demonstrated by looking at headlands, which seem to come stronger, than the rest.

Yes a thick old thatch of something like Bent, thats been established for awhile in a very long dry time ( thoroughly dry down to a deep depth ) with only light sporadic showers, will actually roof over the soil and stop the light showers from slipping into the soil where its needed.
Instead it will land on the thatch and evaporate away before use , that very day .
