Avian flu Protection Measures in force.

I have my sympathies for the free range producers but the barn egg producers wouldn't be very pleased about any premium over their produce for free range.
As a consumer I have the same sympathies but why am I paying more for free range over barn eggs when they haven't been outside?

Besides all that, if this strain is so virulent that all backyard flocks must be kept in etc how come all the wild geese and ducks haven't died? The way this virus is talked about I would expect the obvious carnage myxy brought on the rabbit population when it first appeared.
Take a look at what has happened in France, millions of ducks and geese destroyed,do you really want the same here to keep the consumer happy and watch the price of the remaining free range neggs go through the roof.
Whilst I agree with free range but not at the cost of millions of birds to keep the public happy.

I wonder how many free range farmers will think twice about changing to barn eggs,a lot easier and it releases a lot of land for other uses, everyone wants to ban cage and barn eggs but do they really understand the true position.
We require one hectare of land per two thousand birds, near us is a cage unit with five hundred thousand birds which equates to 250 hectares, where is all this land going to come from.
If all the current cage and barn egg farms gave up it would reduce UK eggs by about 50% so the price would double or we would import from abroad,so please lets see sense in the current situation.
We need some protection for helping maintain a good environment for chickens,so lets hope someone has the courage to extend the 12 week this time.

Thanks OB!
Pretty similar to the England low-risk proposals imo :)

The Cabinet Secretary has decided to put in place a new Prevention Zone, that will take effect from midnight on 28 February until 30 April. This zone apparently covers the whole of Wales. They also say poultry keepers complete the Welsh Government Avian Influenza Prevention Zone Self Assessment Form, but there is no link to this form.

So, suceptable chicks were picked up by people taking few bio-precautions, taken back to a unit that should have impeccable bio-security, and then destroyed because they may have AI. Couldn't make it up, could you? :scratchhead:

I don't think we can blame the RSPCA in this case for ending those chicks. 1800 birds is a fair amount to brood and if there were anyone who had the facilities to put that amount of birds under lamps at a moments notice, they would be a bigger operation and would no way accept a couple thousand birds which may have flu. That would be stupid of them. Nobody in their right mind is going to do that.

It's not the RSPCA who is responsible for their demise, it's the person(s) who dumped them. They were doomed from the start.
