That's me! No hair and makeup unfortunately!Sat in a tiny box room in Cambridge staring at a green ring and bright lights. You can't actually see Louise in the studio, it's an odd sensation!

You came across really well Dan, an excellent spokesman for your industry. I sincerely hope this ends well for all of you.

Basically behind the scenes there is a juggling act between the various tv and radio shows to get A) someone at the studios to switch the kit on and rig you up and B) Take their turns to ask you the same questions which I assume Will the researcher guided them on.

I actually did the radio 4 interview over FaceTime audio in the car in a layby as they could wait for the studio to be ready.

I'm planning my turn on Strictly next Christmas! ;)

well the chickens have a horse box with food and water and is not overcrowded so they can stay in, the geese just gained a horse box too, need to run water in tonight so they can be kept in, will be slightly more cramped for them. then there's the bloody raven in his netted aviary :(

Going to be a bit tricky keeping them all in. Could move them into a big shed but that would mean mixing two batches of hens that I keep apart to reduce disease spread. Hmmm. Maybe partition the shed. Also means moving a load of straw to somewhere else. Busy day today.

BFREPA response: Defra implements avian influenza prevention zone

Robert Gooch, chief executive of BFREPA said: “The decision to implement prevention zones in England and Scotland is a necessary step in response to the rapid spread of avian influenza (AI) across Europe.

“The risk of infection is from wild migratory birds who are leaving cold weather feeding grounds and could head to the UK, carrying with them the potential to bring the H5N8 strain to our shores.

“It would be devastating for a British producer to have to go through the heartbreak of seeing their entire flock wiped out by this virus as we have already seen in continental Europe.

“Housing birds presents significant challenges to free range egg producers but they understand that it is important to reduce the risk of AI spreading.

“It’s crucial for consumers to remember that AI is not a food safety issue and free range eggs will remain a nutritious staple of British diets.”

Notes to editors
• Defra’s housing order will remain in place for 30 days. Full statement here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-measures-to-protect-poultry-against-avian-flu

• The Scottish Government has also imposed a housing order. Full statement here: http://news.gov.scot/news/avian-influenza-protection-measures

• Free range egg producers will retain the ability to market their eggs as free range for the duration of the order.

• Free range egg producers prefer to give their hens the choice to go outside during daylight hours, but with the threat of AI will take steps to increase the amount of stimulation for the hens inside the house.

• Some will place footballs, pecking boxes, enhanced scratching areas and natural vegetation like tree cuttings to encourage the birds to continue to display their natural behaviours.

• BFREPA is the voice of the British free range egg industry representing producers who look after more than 11 million laying hens.

The new shed is fine, but the older shed has less toys in it and less perches for the birds to play on, coupled to a different breed of bird that is very docile and likes to huddle, I think it could give us smothering problems, I will need to get some electric fences working along the walls for their own safety and then small bales of straw, grit, cardboard boxes and anything else I can think of to divert them.

After two or three days of being shut in they will probably settle down but tomorrow they won't be happy!
Chap on the radio this morning saying they are staffing up to go round the perimeter of their houses in the morning to try to prevent birds trampling each other as the congregate to be let out

We have 3 chickens for eggs

Might be best to kill them and get new ones when the threat has past ?

Possibly on BBC 6 o clock news tonight on a pre recorded bit, just wondering if my old TFF body warmer is too shabby to make an appearance?!

Don't kill them, just bung up a bit of chicken netting as a run with a roof on.

This is all precautionary and based on best scientific guesses at this stage, no need for pre-emptive slaughtering!
