Anyone see who the P R A T was on BBC news from Defra (a bloke) saying its not a big problem there have not been many deaths, Is what I heard him say.

Is it possible to keep track of how many thousands of chickens/turkeys/ducks have been taken out of the supply chain?

Just in Norfolk alone that number must be enormous.

EDIT: Should have read the BBC article before posting...

That BBC article is forecasting a 20% deficit in turkey supply on the supermarket shelves.

I'd heard about rearers being advised to kill and freeze birds before time, in case culls spread. Nobody wants big turkeys anyway.

Either way, it sounds expensive for consumers.

Wife makes a cracking 'shepherd's pie' with turkey mince, but this week had to buy chicken mince (from who knows where) as the turkey kind had shot up in price.

Free range turkeys on the Central news this evening. An utter disgrace ! Paddling about in slurry. I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy free range after seeing that. They were saying how it was difficult to find shed space for them now they have to be shut up, but they could have at least put some straw down to keep them clean.

Haven’t seen footage, but one to be fair to to the farmer. The one reason they think so many turkeys are getting ai is from infected straw when they birds are bedded down.
Not sure how they get around that problem

If they don't have green grass under foot there's no point them being outside.
It's possible that they corralled them to reduce the exposure to wild birds, but it did all free range produces a disservice putting them on TV in that state.
A couple of free range poultry produces around here have put photos of their birds on FB on the last days outside just to counter what Joe Public would have thought after seeing that on TV.

Don't use the top bales for poultry. It's a policy I adopted years ago, before bird flu was an issue, as I set up the sheds before harvest with last years straw to avoid doing it amidst the harvest rush.
