Maybelle's grandam in 1993 - she won the 50,000 kg class at Ayr Show the next year aged 12 and a half. She was Maybelle 13th EX and her last daughter , had Maybelle 115 as her 10th calf - so the years really stretch.

They were always photoed standing up the hill outside. Then came the indoor shows with indoor pictures, hence a board to stand on.
Covered with lawn clippings.
Winter meant silage !

The North Americans deemed that cows had to slope uphill and dragged the rest of us in. Cows don't have to run uphill to milk , but the North Americans insisted on it. They also insisted on size at all costs for the showring. Size is one of the most negatively associated traits to longevity , and is also negatively associated with feed conversion rates. The Holstein breed went collectively mad.

@Big_D Classifying go well?

Sorry for slow reply, I was at the silage so didn't see him, was he at you before us?

To be honest I can' really say how good a visit it was as this is only the second time we've classified, done under the young bull proving scheme.
We had an easlad scored as a reference at 76 points, 2 skyfalls at 78 and 79 points, an evolution at 78 points and 2 vitalitys at79 and 81 points

Are there still many Ayrshire's left in Ayrshire?

I'm in south Devon and South Devons would still account for the majority of the suckler cows down here but I don't get many opportunities to see Ayrshire cows, they're pretty few and far between in the SW.

I'm planning on introducing some Ayrshire genetics next year so I still have a while to choose bull/bulls.

Quite a few Ayrshires still in Ayrshire @Cowmangav will be better informed up there you surprise me about south Devon’s being the mainstay though

Sadly in the last 20 years there seem to have been a disproportionate number of Ayrshire herds in Ayrshire , with no successors , mine included. The future looks a bit grim too , as there aren't many new herds starting. One bright spot has been the willingness of some Holstein herds to run a few pedigree Ayrshires once again.

I’m sure someone told me not long ago that there are more Ayrshire’s in the South West than there are in Scotland! And that most in the SW would be grazing herds whereas the Scots are mainly housed now. Could be wrong though.
