Ayrshire cattle

I’m sure someone told me not long ago that there are more Ayrshire’s in the South West than there are in Scotland! And that most in the SW would be grazing herds whereas the Scots are mainly housed now. Could be wrong though.

We are up in the renfrewshire area and still are around a quarter of our herd Ayrshire but within 5 miles of us there are still three or four fully Ayrshire herds

Are there still many Ayrshire's left in Ayrshire?

I'm in south Devon and South Devons would still account for the majority of the suckler cows down here but I don't get many opportunities to see Ayrshire cows, they're pretty few and far between in the SW.

I'm planning on introducing some Ayrshire genetics next year so I still have a while to choose bull/bulls.
I’m thinking of a few as well, maybe we can turn Devon into an Ayrshire hub! What type of cow would you put them on to in your herd? Straight jersey?

I have two J X Ayr which are both good solid cows and I think they both born in 2007 so they've lasted well.

I have put a big portion of the herd to NZ fresian for the last three years so half my replacements next spring will be crossbred and the plan is to put all of those to Ayrshire on a three way crossing program.

I've lost for too many to Tb in the last decade an the majority seem to be good young cows. I don't remember ever losing one that's already on the cull list.

As part of a crossbreeding program is there any need for me to look beyond Napier? He looks to be a cracking bull for any grazing herd and very well proven.

Yeah he is a good bull, he is a son of meikle laught triple crown, I find all the sons of him to be the type i like but restricted where I can use him now, will get a few pics for you

The Ayrshire have grown on me, oddly as we are moving to BF. Limited winter feedstock may lead to much hay included in ration. Good job we are low output as we will certainly be low input from this drought. 13 litres ave on once-a-day.
Not sure if chopping hay will help intakes or just waste diesel.
