I don’t know all I know is they bigger and bigger and the small one disappear , it’s probably a glimps into the future for us all ?it doesn't make sense though.....they reckon they're loosing £20/pig so a 500 sow herd lost £200k in last yr...on rented ground so no assets
And when’s any farmer ever told the truth when it comes to earningsit doesn't make sense though.....they reckon they're loosing £20/pig so a 500 sow herd lost £200k in last yr...on rented ground so no assets
No. The 500-1000 sow lads on rented ground would mostly be weaner producers and often keep the sows on BnB for a big company, so never lose money (but never make a fortune).it doesn't make sense though.....they reckon they're loosing £20/pig so a 500 sow herd lost £200k in last yr...on rented ground so no assets

Yes, breeder feeders might be losing a bit if feed not bought well and performance not tip top but they can make a shed load if things go well.
I hope what i've just written is true as i'm changing from selling 30000 weaners per year to selling 10000 finished pigs per year at the worst time for a while to be a finished pig producer.
think of you everytime pig job is mentioned cos i know you're at 'sharp end'.......i've been reading pig world website.....i'm far from expert but i thought weaner prices looked like they were holding up
Very smart, I’m sure we were only allowed to put in small 40 place pens when we did it because the pig owner claimed the feed conversion wouldn’t be good enough?1000 finisher pigs in 4 x 250 pigs model recently handed over for a Lincolnshire farmer.
Scope included 8m bays, 8m gates, drinkers, feeders, feeding system , bin

Most weaner producers will have a good base in the price (and a maximum). My last contract was at a decent fixed price, the only trouble was that took the company boss at his word when he shook my hand and said that he would "never drop me in the sh!t."
Send a lorry load of your sows finest manure to drop on his drive to remind him of his promise?
Are weaners still around the 35 quid mark every time I’ve bought a few for ourselves in the last 15 years they have been 35 quid when everything else has gone up

Surely the pigs will have those camlocks off in no timeHere's one small example of a practical, thinking , hands on farmer
Here are our standard combination nipple troughs that a pig man usually shakes the gate as he shuts up for scraping ; proper milled drains retrofitted by him on site

Considering similar venture for indoor breeder finisher unit to nursery system. Just wondering how this is going for you now and levels of return on investmentWe were a breeding unit, 650 outdoor sows. We couldn't get any decent staff and a few bad winters where my dad started to stuggle with his legs. We were contract breeders and the company we were on for were looking for nursery accommodation so we made the decision to pack up breeding.
All our accommodation was in good order but would have needed replacing in the next couple of years. As it was tidy all our kit sold well.
We now have 5600 weaners on to 40 kg. Most are outside but 2000 are in sheds.
It's not as an interesting job (my dad finds it boring) but it is a lot easier and the only time we really need help is when power washing all the kit down.
Companies are always desperate for finisher accommodation and not so much nursery.
I put wheels on our gates and they last about three weeks before being turned into component parts - on the lookout for steel replacements!Do the pigs not eat the wheels on the gates
