Bac scan problem.

If you have cluster flushes then make sure they are functioning properly.

We are also currently looking into a bacto issue that we believe is due to sample management once it leaves our bulk tank. In some cases it is not going into NML the same day due to late pickup from farm and they are always high (600+) and when the sample gets to the lab the same day it is low (< 20). Our sample from 25th May bacto was over 5000 (!!!) funny, the 26th was a scorcher and the sample didn't arrive at the lab until late that evening (ie about 30 hrs after it left our tank at 5C).

One other thing to check (as we've been battling a bacto problem too recently) is the quality of the chemical.
Bad drum of acid did for us as it allowed milkstone to build up inside the tank.
Apparently acid can reduce in potency rapidly once the cap if off

We had issues in Jan/Feb we went through the hole parlour everything! Ended up being the sawdust sent it off to be tested come back it had bacillus in it,got some more out of the supplier and the problem vanished! Just go through the parlour before you start taking plate cooler apart etc

There are four problem areas ... milk cooling fast enough,, bulk tank cleaning ,,, parlour circulation cleaning,,and dirty cows ... first thing you check is parlour circulation temp(85 degrees at start dump on floor at 65 , chemical at correct concentration) and then the most likely cause is a dirty bulk tank ( again check wash is working at correct temp and right amount of chemical )..buy a decent thermometer

Another quick tip is take a sample direct from the fill pipe (end of all the milking plant but before the tank) and ask the dairy to Bactoscan that too, compare it to the tank sample and while it's not 100% accurate, it should let you know if the bacteria is in the plant or in the tank..... most wont charge for one extra sample either...!

Just don't take it right at the start of milking, as I understand the first milk out of the pipe is normally a bit higher bacteria

Yeah take it at the end as you drain the milk through - If you have the older style plate cooler with a drain plug, this is an easy place to take a sample from after all the cows, before any wash through...

What is best way to clean the vac lines
we always used to use a strong milk stone and boiling water solution and leave in the line between milkings then flush with clean boiling water followed by a cold water flush to finish. make sure you turn your pulsators off, they don't like water

We've had our share of problems down the years but first port of call is always the tank, check every single conceivable place it might be, a build up of crap in some corner does more damage in the tank than anywhere..We've often changed liners and it hasn't made a difference though a bend or bit of rubber pipe in some inaccessible place that has been overlooked can be the answer..

With this heat you will probably find your bulk tank is struggling to get temperatures down quick enough. Check how long it is taking to get down to your normal storing point. Also is your agitator cutting in regularly. If not you will get a build up of warm milk on the top of your tank. .

We had some very high bactos occurring randomly. Identified the cause to bio-aerosols contaminating the auto sampling on the milk tanker. These were the result of our pressure washing the collecting yard, right next to the tanker when he was filling.

Been having a few problems with the dreaded bactoscan, was getting Bactos in the hundreds, thought we got on top of it having 2 Bactos of 24 in a row, then yesterday I got a text at lunchtime when we normally get it at 6 in the morning.bacto went up to 75 again and cell count went up 50 cells to 150, the conspiracy theorist brain in me is thinking they forgot to test it (because these are additional tests) . Does cell count and bacto increase the longer you wait to test it?

don't think the time the text has come through has much to do with the time it was tested, sometimes i get a email before 6am sometimes it will be around lunchtime, but it never seems to muck about with the scc and bacto the later it comes through

We are struggling with ours even with pre spray and wipe it's still 30 to 35 even swopped ambic filters for big sock one. Pain in the backside (n) might have to singe their bags but hate that job, we still have a few too many kick unit off this won't help the flies upset them a week ago
