Agree but I feel we have done nothing special but I do believe in old fashioned manners treat people how you want to be treated. Yes it a good feeling when other people praise you on your children.

"Nothing Special"

Never underestimate the importance of holding true to decent morals giving rise to great manners and respect towards others in the same light.

You should take pride in knowing your children have grown into genuinely nice adults who are respected by others following the guidance given by you and your partner!

The national minimum wage for 18 and over is £5.60 an hour. It doesn't really matter whether they are paid cash, because they are unlikely to be taxpayers anyhow if they are students. Although if they are benefits, you should keep careful records and do it properly. Having suitable insurance is vital, as well as being responsible for inexperienced young people's H&S.

£5ph for a student cash isnt bad for a pretty easy day plus at the end of the day it is work experience having a varied day which is what farming is about. Most students are keen to work a full week at half term doing loads of tasks as long as they get paid.

I am considering getting a gardener in just to spend the day sorting out the mess around the house however hubby will go mad, Goes back to the thing of having all the equipment but no time. Meanwhile the place looks a mess.

I dont mention money and they dont ask, most students are happy to get the experience.

As well as running my small flock i also work in a local supermarket, im on £7.67ph (for just stacking shelves) personally think your low balling a bit when you can get twice as much money for twice as little work

I think you just found the reason they don't come back!
I agree with him(y) @Chasingmytail I was getting £5 a hour when I started at 14 now coming 16 and got a pay rise at xmas. Your views of a "good wage" and a actual good wage are a bit different it seems:scratchhead:OK its not "cash in hand" but if there just working Saturdays there never going to make enough to pay tax so how does it matter?

Is there any hope?

No. You cannot afford to pay even mimimum wages.

I have been in your situation once, where the workload increased to the level where outside help was needed. Decision - stop.

For a while I did use some schoolmates of my son on a Saturday afternoon and it was all very enjoyable, but it soon became apparent that kids are not what was required. Apart from this brief episode I have never operated a business where I needed to employ somebody. I never will.

Either be content with the size of business you can manage without employees or be prepared to meet all the requirements of employing proper staff on proper wages and under proper conditions. I think you cannot afford to do that anymore than I could, and probably, like me, you do not want permanent employees.

Cut back your own workload and enjoy life more. You will live longer.

I went to college at 16 yo with never having stepped foot on a farm before - Total City Boy

While at college I got my mother to drive me around several of the 'Local' farms looking for any Saturday and Sunday work as well as when on holidays!

Started working on a family farm where the guys son was just to young still!

Jobs varied from the very menial brushing grain stores, yards by hand etc and washing his truck and the quad and all other vehicles!

After a short while after he saw I was seriously interested I started getting more involved with the stock and machiney!

I spent 3 years there and by the end of it I was working a good few nights during the week helping him and was left solely alone with majority of tasks including fencing, mucking out etc!

All the time I was there from sweeping sheds to ploughing I was on £8 an hour cash.....

And to this date he still takes on young lads all 16 -17 and has had his fair share of bad and good ones!

For £5 an hour wat do u expect??? "If you pay peanuts you get monkeys"
I have lads on £12 an hour they do the work of 2 so cheap in reality

Dont forget they're £5 an hour for a reason

H-C

Depends on what you have them doing though. £12 an hour for menial task manual labour is far too much imo.

This has more to do with upbringing than anything else. Correct parenting and guidance leads to this attitude...... Hopefully one day people will speak of my kids like they do yours.

Unfortunately it is often the exception and not the rule these days.
