Backend oil?

Having difficulty seeing the backend oil level! is there a trick to see the oil on the dip stick?
why can’t they put a colour in it like red diesel….

Touch the dipstick onto a clean rag or tissue

Get the light to just catch the glint of the oil.

Try checking hydraulic oil on a Jcb 8 ton 360 digger. It's got a round sight glass and always appears empty.

If you use JCB oil it is yellow.

Dip it when cold , often easier to see the other side of the dipstick

Last can of jcb Op68 hyd oil I bought 2 years ago was £100 plus vat for 20litres

Paint the dipstick, I find black helps although jcb and some others use white but that dont help at all if oil is clear in colour.

Don't change the oil ....... you can easily see it when it's black !

Not a clue nowadays. Had a 200l drum of it for a while and that was surprisingly good value 5 years ago.

now have the same trouble with regular hyd oil and have to shine a torch in the sight glass at different angles to see the level.

As far as I'm aware it's pretty much the same stuff butnhy trans has better water absorption properties. Comes out of a special hole in Canada or something.
