So if we dont put up a hard border but rely on tech and pre documentation for goods what will the EU do ? They will have to put in a hard border or look very foolish, only around 2% of goods that come through southampton are checked now, even allowing for the amount that comes from the EU very little is actually checked to see if whats is declared is actually in the containers etc, as for immigration would Ireland really want thousands coming in via other eu countries on their way here ?

Under the backstop the United Kingdom loses the power to make laws/legislate for part of her sovereign territory, Northern Ireland. A clear breach of the Belfast Agreement. Effectively NI is governed by a committee with UK reps and EU reps. Effectively local politicians in NI (if Stormont was up and running) would have little power to legislate for NI. So

Effectively we have a limited form of direct rule at present, not full blown direct rule since Stormont has not been suspended or dissolved. A number of projects are in limbo because there has been no ministerial sign off on them and legal action on a project given the go ahead by senior civil servants has made them unwilling to proceed further.

We already have a border in the form of different vat rates, different income tax regimes, different currency etc. IF tariffs are imposed they can be collected by the companies involved in the transaction and forwarded to HMRC in the same way as vat. There is no need for checks at the border, random checks can be done elsewhere as it is at the moment. A certain amount of illegal goods/activities will slip through the net as it does at the minute.

Do you trust the British government? I certainly don't. The backstop means that if the British government are a bunch of lying wotsits and their magical technological solutions do not appear the backstop will apply. If the British government are so convinced these alternative arrangements will work, how come they object to an 'if it doesn't work' backstop?
I also find it interesting that 'they' - the EU - care more for the Irish people (Eire and the North) and the incredible achievement of the Good Friday Agreement than the toffs in London.

So effectively, NI becomes part of the ROI (Europe) by default? Meaning all the years of violence and death, negotiation and reconciliation have been for naught? Do I read that right?

I voted out to stop us becoming part of the US of europe, which if you dont have a life and wanted to check you could find I have said on here many times, cant see irelannd wanting thousands of illegal immigrants transiting through eire to get to the north so its not going to be a huge problem, why woud eu citizens want to come illegally, especially when according to many remainers the uk is about to go down the pan ?
Goods are pretty easy to check remotely, the main ones that will have tariffs would be food and they are very traceable already, the other main one woulld be cars and cant see many wanting to smuggle them, now if the eu want to control our exports to them then let them put the border up
